Vanderbilt University Electrician Journeyman in Nashville, Tennessee

Vanderbilt University has an exciting opportunity for an Electrician Journeyman to join the Zone Maintenance Team in Vanderbilt University Maintenance and Operations. The Electrician team is responsible for trouble shooting electrical circuits; wiring tents for special events; starting, testing, and running emergency generators and logging results; and repairing, replacing, or installing motors, motor starters, light fixture and switches.

About the Work Unit:

Facilities provides facilities support for all construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University space and facilities; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space; grounds care for 330 acres that are a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and the Medical Center.

Facilities annual budget exceeds $100 million in operating expenses and includes over 400 employees. This branch manages major capital project expenditures totaling $125 million annually and facility renewal, replacement, and large maintenance project expenditures totaling $20 million annually. The Facilities Business Operations Center provides support to the entire department, specifically regarding the areas of Finance, Employee Relations, Systems, Contracts and General Administration.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits

  • Start and test run emergency generators and log results

  • Repair, replace, or install the following components of an electrical system:

  • motor

  • motor starter

  • disconnect

  • circuit breaker

  • light fixture

  • switch

  • receptacle

  • Wire tents for special events

  • Hook up power to television trucks

  • Properly dispose of lamps, ballasts, and batteries

  • Operate various types of lifts

  • Assist zone HAR mechanics, plumber, and carpenter in the performance of their duties

  • Utilize work order system in all aspects including parts ordering, printing work orders, parts look-up

  • Set up and monitor personal work order query

  • Process daily work order time sheet

  • Operate vehicle/golf cart and perform operator level maintenance

  • Other duties as related to classification

Supervisory Relationships:

Though this position does not have supervisory responsibilities. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Zone Manager.

Experience and Education:

  • High School Graduate or GED is required.

  • Formal Electrician training program is preferred.

Skills and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license is required.

  • 5 years of experience in a relevant position

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, reach or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to lift as at least 70 lbs

  • Proficient at troubleshooting and making necessary repairs to FCU

  • Able to work in various weather conditions

  • High work ethic
