Job Summary and Qualifications

The corporate commissioning engineer shall be responsible for ensuring that all newly built and renovated spaces are designed according to the HCA MEP guidelines, are built according to said guidelines and are operating at maximum efficiency at the time the space is handed over to a facility for occupancy.

General Responsibilities

Project Design: The Cx engineer shall work with the project design team to assure the designs meet the HCA MEP guidelines and that all equipment submittals adhere to the guidelines as well as that they follow the building capital memorandums.

Functional Performance testing: The Cx engineer shall ensure all functional performance testing is taking place in a coordinated fashion and that all results are properly documented.

Owner verification: The Cx engineer shall perform an owner verification of all MEP systems through a mixture of spot checks and full operational evaluation testing.

Development of MEP Guidelines : The Cx engineer shall work with team members to continually develop HCA MEP Guidelines including controls sequences, functional performance tests and installation details.

Special Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems (including centrifugal chiller plants), Steam Plants, Electrical systems (including Emergency Generators), Medical Gas Systems and Building Automation Systems in healthcare facilities required

Knowledge of Joint Commission, OSHA, NFPA and other healthcare regulatory agencies preferred

Construction Management

Conducts project site visits as needed during construction. Most projects take between six to twenty-four months to build. During the course of a project, the site visits would include the following activities:

Leads and participates in coordination meetings with internal and external team members, including state and local authorities having jurisdiction.

Makes necessary decisions on issues that arise.

Observe construction activity to verify conformance with the contract documents and quality of workmanship. Identify and document any deficiencies.

Observe contractor's and subcontractor’s field management personnel to verify the project is being properly and efficiently managed. Take appropriate action, if necessary.

Evaluate and monitor the contractor's project planning and scheduling activities to verify the proper emphasis is placed on commissioning.

Follow up and respond to coordination problems that routinely occur during installation of different systems. Initiate appropriate changes in the design, if necessary.

Maintain relations with and manage expectations of hospital administration. Communicate progress of commissioning and explain delays. Advises construction manager on plant operational features, improved construction, and changes to the project.

Logs progress and needs for follow-up by contractors. Prepare written documentation routinely.

During the construction process, ensures phasing, plans, and mechanical/electrical procedures are established and followed in order to provide for safety of the public, staff and patient through commissioning prior to completion.

Evaluate requests for changes in design/construction to determine if benefits are worth the additional costs, time or deviation for standards.

Education & Experience

Bachelor degree

7+ years of experience in commissioning on multiple healthcare project sites; preferably large complex project experience

Licensed Mechanical Engineer (PE) or CxA. Preferred

Travel up to 75%
