The Microsoft 365 team is looking for principal software engineers to help architect, design, and build one of the fastest growing cloud services in Microsoft.

Principal engineers at Microsoft play a critical role in driving the technical details for projects spanning multiple areas and product teams. They need to understand the design, code, and features of many different areas, quickly come up to speed and implement features that delight customers and partners via their intuitiveness, attention to detail, and responsiveness. They must be able to design and implement services that are high scale, low latency, always on, low cost to maintain and operate. They influence other developers to come up with the right design and architecture for their components and make them the model for common patterns going forward. They have good partnership and influence skills and are motivated and able to work across multiple sub-teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Drive multiple projects through to delivery removing obstacles as needed to ensure success.

  • Develop architecture and design of large-scale distributed software services and solutions.

  • Drive improvements to software engineering practices.

  • Prioritize engineering investments to balance short- and long-term goals.

  • Mentor and develop other engineers.

  • Collaborate with teams across Microsoft to achieve goals

  • Keep up to date with industry trends and apply to projects as appropriate.

  • Promote collaboration across teams for code reuse and knowledge sharing.

  • Gain a working understanding of Microsoft as a business and collaborate with mentors and leaders to contribute to cohesive, end-to-end experiences for customers.

  • Identify investments needed to improve customer/partner experience through a data driven approach.

Qualifications

Essential qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science or Engineering OR equivalent years of work experience.

  • 10+ years of software design and development experience with backend services.

  • 10+ years hands on experience in any Object-Oriented coding language such as C++, C#, Java or Python or equivalent experience with C.

  • 3+ years architecting distributed systems

Preferred qualifications

  • Ability to communicate technical details clearly across organizational boundaries.

  • Experience in DevOps to maintain live services and\or application frameworks.

  • Cloud and services experience, with Azure cloud experience highly desirable.

  • Excellent analytical skills with systematic and structured approach to software design

  • Passion for building highly scalable, highly reliable services.

  • Experience with or exposure to Agile and iterative development processes.
