Objectives

The Knox County Engineer's Office is seeking a full-time Highway Worker 1 to join their team. This is a classified, bargaining unit position. Among their many duties, a Highway Worker 1 performs general daily maintenance and cleaning tasks, landscaping duties, patching work on roadways, traffic control and preventative maintenance. Essential Functions

45% Performs overall general daily maintenance and cleaning to the county highway garage, engineer's office, and associated buildings and grounds. Maintains accurate daily reports as they relate to the work assignments as required. Understand and apply general janitorial and maintenance tasks, including but not limited to heavy sweeping, mopping, latrine cleaning and disinfecting, interior/exterior glass cleaning, floor striping/buffing, trash/rubbish removal, snow and ice removal/treatment. Maintenance tasks include but not limited to light bulb replacement, access gate maintenance, simple electrical work, plumbing, roofing, carpentry and painting. 20% Performs landscaping duties such as cutting grass, weeds, roadside foliage and removing trees and brush using equipment such as brush chipper, chain/power saws, tractors with side and rear mowers, and weed-eaters; 10% Performs patching work on holes in roadways to include preparing and repairing with patching material, adding mix and tamping down using shovels, rakes, brooms and asphalt rollers; 10% Performs traffic control in the vicinity of job sites with the placement of traffic safety warning/control signs/devices to protect the public and the road crew; 10% Performs preventative maintenance and minor repair to equipment to include but not limited to, checking and maintaining proper fluid levels such as antifreeze, power steering, hydraulic, lubricating moving parts, checking tires, belts, lights, brakes and general cleaning of vehicles both inside and out, replacing lights; 5% Perform sweeping activities on roadway intersections utilizing power/hand/brooms. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent works under direct or general supervision and follows established policies, procedures, work rules and terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Monitors that all safety requirements are in place and all safety procedures are followed to protect crew, other employees and property. Must maintain a telephone at place of residence or a cellular phone. Job Standards

Must possess a valid high school diploma or GED, plus experience in construction or related work or an equivalent combination of training and/or related work experience. Must possess a valid driver's license. Ability to: interpret a variety of instructions, policies and procedures pertaining to work assignments in written, oral, picture or schedule form and to communicate in common English language; understand and apply general highway construction, repair and maintenance procedures; perform a variety of unskilled tasks relevant to construction, repair and maintenance of the county roadway system, rights-of-way, bridges, buildings and grounds maintenance and repair.
