Job Description

The Country Medical Director (CMD) will lead all Medical Affairs activities across all Gilead therapeutic areas in the Russia affiliate. The postholder will have strong collaboration with Governmental Affairs, Public Affairs and Market Access and all cross functional partners. The individual will be an active member of the Russia Leadership team.

Essential Duties & Job Functions:

The responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Define a strategic medical plan for the pertinent therapeutic areas (including but not limited to HIV, liver diseases, antifungals, inflammation, cancer) in collaboration with the General Manager and other pertinent stakeholders

  • Executes strategic plans consistent with the Therapeutic Area Medical Affairs Plan of Action

  • Engage in scientific exchange and communication with external audiences in Gilead’s therapeutic areas of focus

  • Responsible for ensuring the successful dissemination of innovative clinical information to thought leaders and foster medical and scientific information exchange from and throughout the specific disease communities.

  • Identify, establish, and maintain scientific relationships with opinion leaders regarding disease-state and product-specific information

  • Educate key stakeholders (government, insurers, NGOs, civil society, and others) on Gilead’s clinical and pharmaco-economic data supporting products and therapeutic areas of focus

  • Active representation of the medical affairs team as a member of the Russia Leadership Team

  • Embrace his/her role as a strategic decision maker at the country level

  • Play a pivotal role in shaping affiliate priorities and ensuring appropriate alignment of medical plans

  • Support the Clinical Operations organization as needed with Gilead-sponsored research and strengthen Gilead’s presence in designated therapeutic areas (e.g., HIV, liver diseases, antifungals, inflammation, cancer, cell therapy, etc.)

  • Attend and provide scientific support for Medical Affairs activities and scientific sessions at national, regional, and international conferences

  • Lead and drive the medical training of IC region colleagues and regional business partners, if needed

  • Support and partner with the Medical Information team as needed to execute their activities

  • Recruit, lead, and supervise a team of Medical Managers whose job functions will be aligned with those of the Director and the rest of the Medical Affairs infrastructure

  • Oversee strong development planning and support of the team allowing grow towards their full potential

  • Serve as a medical/scientific resource for thought leaders through a thorough understanding of emerging information on our products, disease states, ideas and trends in patient care.

  • Provides clear strategic guidance for the development and execution of the TA strategy, the medical Plans of Action (POAs) and cross-functional projects, including programs that involve non-traditional stakeholders

  • Sets clear performance expectations that are aligned with company and department goals; monitors progress and delivers fair and effective performance reviews

  • Plans and monitors the departmental budget

  • Change management leadership

  • Participates in the exchange with the medical community and maintains a thought leader network

  • In addition to the Russian affiliate components the lead may have role expansion opportunities to support wider ICR leadership needs. Such expansions could include wider geographical support or participation/ leadership in above country ICR projects.

Education & Experience:

  • The ideal candidate will be an MD, preferably with board certification in one of Gilead’s key areas. Previous experience in Gilead’s key therapeutic areas is highly relevant.

  • 10 years of experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries preferred.

  • Experience in clinical and/or research in infectious diseases, gastroenterology, and/or hepatology, and /or oncology is preferred.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed structure.

  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Russian essential.

  • MBA or other formal business training welcomed.

Working Conditions:

  • Travel to domestic and international meetings which will include occasional weekend travel is required. (up to 20%)
