Recreation Planner – Social Science Technician

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management are seeking an intern who will help with the BLM Monticello and Bears Ears National Monument recreation program and focus on improvements to visitor use data. Prospective candidates would come away with a detail-oriented understanding of visitor use management principles, knowledge of the tools and equipment used to accurately estimate visitation, and a greater understanding of the varied landscapes contained in the Monticello Field Office and Bears Ears National Monument. This position would include field work outside in the remote and outstanding landscapes of southeastern Utah.

Position Responsibilities will include:

· Placement and calibration of visitor counters, generally in the field setting on public lands within the Monticello Field Office and Bears Ears National Monument.

· Complete analyses of the Monticello Field Office’s existing traffic counters and improve calibration and use of counters.

· Analysis, data collection and seeking creative solutions to data collection challenges in coordination with project mentor.

· Support for BLM’s recreation program including providing visitor information, helping with recreation field projects, and completion of other recreation projects to gain knowledge of public land management.

Minimum Requirements:

· Recently graduated or currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in relevant field including recreation management, statistics, sociology, environmental science, or other applicable field.

· Candidate must have demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently in variable environments without direct supervision.

· Candidate must have valid U.S. driver’s license with insurable driving record of at least 3 years and be prepared to drive through rough terrain in remote areas.

· High school diploma or equivalent at start of position

· Applicants must pass criminal background checks required for both DOI and AmeriCorps eligibility

· Must be 18 years or older

· Must be a US Citizen or legal permanent resident

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience or interest in field data collection.

· Experience or interest in working with indigenous populations and working in remote settings

· Exposure to federal agency work and job-specific training. Future mentorship opportunities are possible following internship.

· Successful completion of the rigorous internship program, along with their conferred degree, DHA-RAI Program participants that meet Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for a BLM mission-critical/hard-to-fill occupation may be directly appointed without competition to a full time, permanent position vacancy.
