Organizational Summary

Shrub Oak International School is the new benchmark in autism education. We are a private day and boarding school in northern Westchester County, serving the needs of an international coed population of children, adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum. Shrub Oak is a school where each student is respected as an individual and surrounded by experts who care and work to bring out each student’s greatest strengths. Our curriculum brings together the most advanced and successful evidence-based clinical and academic approaches in ASD education to prepare our students for independent adult life and employment. Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Education, the Special Education Science Teacher is a 12-month, professional position provides instructional leadership in academic content, with a focus around science, based on ITEP goals and/or diploma requirements. In addition, the Science Teacher will have a strong partnership with the clinical staff to provide an individualized, evidence-based educational program considering each student's interests, strengths and needs. The Teacher will also oversee Educational Assistants and 1:1s as appropriate providing training and mentoring on instructional practices. Daily instruction by the Science Teacher will occur within the school building, on the school grounds and in the community. The Science Teacher will communicate closely with all levels of staff from all areas of Clinical and Campus Life to develop a unique enhanced educational experience. Each student's educational program will be designed to enrich their academic, activities of daily life and vocational development using hands-on, student driven activities that are goal-oriented and self-directed. The Science Teacher also actively assists with other programs, events, and services, and has the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of educational responsibilities. Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Special Education or related degree with a concentration/certification in science and/or a bachelor's degree in science

  • Current NY State Special Education teaching license (or equivalent) or eligible to obtain one

  • Demonstrates knowledge of federal law (IDEA), state law, and national standards related to special education

  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience with technology applications as they relate to instructional resources and strategies

  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrates interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Ability to use Shrub Oak’s technology system

  • Ability to adapt, remain flexible and make appropriate decisions under pressure and evolving circumstances

  • Experience with middle and high school students with Autism and related disorders

  • Regular and consistent attendance is required

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Credentials in HS, middle or adolescent special education

  • Expertise in a specific academic content area

  • Knowledge of best practices in special education

  • Knowledge of educational and vocational assessment tools

  • Knowledge of data collection and analysis for decision-making

  • Knowledge of a second language

  • Master's or Ph.D. in specific content area

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:  Full time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week, with expected participation in extra-curricular school activities.
