Library Systems & Services Science and Technology Librarian in Mobile, Alabama

LAC Federal is seeking Scientific and Technical Librarians to work for a federal agency technical library in the Mobile, Alabama area. The Librarians play a vital role in maintaining and managing the library collections of books, serial publications, documents, audiovisual materials, and other resources. They provide essential assistance to both groups and individuals in locating and accessing materials, ensuring efficient and effective use of the library's resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collection Management: Oversee the organization, acquisition, cataloging, and classification of scientific and technical materials in various formats, ensuring their accessibility and relevance to users.

  • User Assistance: Assist patrons in locating and obtaining materials relevant to their research needs, providing guidance on effective search strategies and utilization of reference sources, including card catalogs, online databases, and periodical indexes.

  • Information Provision: Furnish information to library users regarding library activities, facilities, rules, and services, effectively communicating the range of resources and services available to them.

  • Circulation Services: Issue and receive library materials for circulation or use, maintaining accurate records of transactions and ensuring the timely availability of materials to users.

  • Display Management: Curate and arrange displays of books and other library materials, highlighting relevant scientific and technical topics or thematic collections to enhance user engagement and awareness.

  • Reference Materials Maintenance: Maintain reference and circulation materials, ensuring their accuracy, completeness, and accessibility to users, including periodic review and updating of collections as needed.

  • Correspondence Handling: Respond to correspondence on special reference subjects, providing accurate and timely information to external stakeholders and patrons seeking specialized assistance.

  • Subject Compilation: Compile lists of library materials according to subjects or interests, facilitating targeted access to resources for specific user groups or research purposes.

  • Collection Development: Collaborate with library management to select, order, catalog, and classify new materials, identifying relevant scientific and technical resources to enhance the library's collection and meet the evolving needs of its users.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 to 9 years of experience in a library setting, with a focus on scientific and technical collections management preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of library classification systems, cataloging standards, and information retrieval tools.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively assist and support library users from diverse backgrounds.

  • Proficiency in relevant technology and library management systems, including integrated library systems (ILS) and online databases.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively in a dynamic environment.
