Job Information

Solid Waste Special Service District #1 Diesel Mechanic or Lube Tech in MOAB, Utah

Under general supervision, performs preventative maintenance services and inspects, diagnoses and repairs vehicles and equipment. The Diesel Mechanic performs repairs and maintenance on diesel and non-diesel equipment and trucks including, but not limited, chassis components, vehicle refuse bodies and control systems, hydraulic, electrical, air brake systems, general engine work, HVAC components, suspension, drive train and steering systems. The Diesel Mechanic may also perform basic tire work, such as replacement, tire rotation, and tread depth checks.

Maintains a working knowledge of, and moderate skill proficiency in the following vehicle components and systems, with the ability to perform preventative and repair maintenance functions, both on-site and on the road:

  • Maintains advanced knowledge to diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy equipment.
  • Refuse bodies, including control, hydraulic and electrical systems; and air and hydraulic braking systems.
  • Engine repair and maintenance.
  • Suspension, drivetrain, and steering systems.
  • Heating and air conditioning.
  • Performs line maintenance welding and fabrication.
  • Safely provides road service when necessary to ensure that the District's equipment is returned to operation in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintains inventories of tools, parts, filters, equipment fluids, and other related items in conjunction with the Facilities Manager and Operations Director.
  • Complete related documentation for operations, equipment repairs, and maintenance including fueling, oil changes, cleaning, and related maintenance and repair functions.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or G.E.D and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in automotive/truck and heavy equipment maintenance and repair with completion of an accredited vocational technical school program with one (1) year of fleet experience is recommended.
  • Proficiency  in vehicle and equipment diagnosis and repair, including working knowledge of fuel, ignition, cooling, mechanical, suspension, drive train, engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical, and air brake systems.
  • Skill in operating applicable shop machinery, tools, equipment, parts, and procedures utilized during the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment and skill in repair of special purpose equipment.
  • Ability to complete required paperwork to accurately document repairs, utilization of parts and associated repair times including ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must possess a valid Utah State Driver's License.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Successfully complete and pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, and items that may be in municipal solid waste or mechanical hazards associated with an open automotive shop environment.
  • Work conditions may include standing and walking on level and uneven surfaces, twisting, sitting, climbing stairs and/or ladders, bending, pushing, pulling, crouching, reaching, crawling, grasping, dragging, lifting and carrying items weighting 50 pounds or more. May work above shoulder level with power and/or hand tools weighing 15 pounds or less in restricted, enclosed space(s).
  • Requires meeting the physical requirements of the position and have mobil ty, hearing, visual acuity, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
  • Work may have to be performed outside in all types of weather in the event of an emergency repair where equipment cannot be brought to a more sheltered environment (e.g. maintenance shop).
