Job Description Summary:

The Staff Environmental Scientist will collect environmental samples, oversee cleanup actions, and write plans and reports for characterization and remediation projects at contaminated sites. Examples of media that may be monitored and sampled include building materials, soil, groundwater, surface water, ambient air, and subsurface vapors. This position primarily supports the remediation of underutilized sites in Montana, Idaho, and Eastern Washington and spill response in Wyoming's Oil & Gas fields. This position interfaces frequently with colleagues from diverse technical backgrounds and requires the ability to communicate clearly with regulatory agencies and subcontractors.

Requirements

Position Requirements:

Education Requirement:A Bachelor’s degree in earth, engineering, environmental sciences, or related field is required.

Experience Requirement:Experience with environmental sampling equipment and work near drill rigs and excavators is preferred. Additionally, NewFields prefers applicants with experience collecting building materials samples for asbestos, and evaluating for lead-based paint.

Training Requirement:OSHA HAZWOPER safety training is preferred but not required. Additional training that is preferred but not required includes certification as an asbestos inspector, asbestos abatement supervisor, and/or for post-abatement air sampling, such as NIOSH 582 certification.

Software:The position requires the applicant to have working knowledge of Microsoft Office© software. Working knowledge of field data collection platforms and some GIS and data management software is advantageous.

Required Travel:The Staff Scientist will frequently travel to project sites in Montana, Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Wyoming. Opportunities exist for additional domestic and international travel.

Physical Demands:Field assignments may include difficult and diverse climatic conditions. Position requires standing, walking, repetitive arm and leg motion, squatting, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs. for extended hours. Position requires use of hand tools and equipment without causing bodily harm. This position may also require extended periods of sitting when compiling data and writing reports.

Essential Functions:

  • Collect environmental samples of media such as building materials, soil, groundwater, surface water, ambient air, or subsurface vapors.

  • Review field sampling plans and regulatory guidance to prepare for sample collection.

  • Assemble equipment and confirm logistical details with landowners and subcontractors.

  • Provide summaries of field findings.

  • Oversee subcontractor remedial actions to address contamination of soil, water, or air.

  • Complete Phase I and II environmental site assessments in compliance with ASTM guidelines and NewFields Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Assist in the evaluation and presentation of data, and provide text interpretations of data to supervisor.

  • Participate in team-based project work seeking client satisfaction and on-time completion of high quality technical work products.

  • Perform other tasks as requested.

Salary Range:$50,000 to $75,000, negotiable and based on experience. Competitive benefits are offered to full-time employees in this role.
