HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Job Description

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

To operate a variety of equipment used in the construction of all types of projects from commercial site work to municipal infrastructure. The position may assist other craft workers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS

  • Operate heavy construction equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, skidsteers, rollers, etc.

  • Understand survey and layout markings, what they mean, and how to use them for grading operations and the construction of footings and foundations, underground utilities and services, storm drains, and other structures.

  • Excavate and fill to dimensions and locations as specified on design drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions.

  • Perform routine inspections and minor maintenance on equipment such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning.

  • Collaborate with other crews and subcontractors to complete tasks safely and correctly.

  • Follow directions from foremen and superintendent and if required, provide feedback on operational optimization.

  • Keep work area clean and free of debris and tools and equipment in clean working order.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Handle all interactions with coworkers, subcontractors, clients, the public, etc. in a professional manner.

  • Go the extra mile to ensure the project is completed safely, on time, under budget, and with zero quality issues.

  • Exercise extreme ownership of your workmanship and operations.

  • Never stop improving by initiating personal development strategies and suggestions for company-wide process improvements.

  • Written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-motivation, punctuality, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

    EXPERIENCE & SKILLS DESIRED

  • 3+ years operating equipment and at least 2 years operating excavator and loader

  • Ability to read plans and check grades

  • Perform basic mathematical calculations

  • Understanding of tools/equipment and safe use/operation of each

    CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification is preferred

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred

  • Tanker endorsements are preferred

  • National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) certification is preferred

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is exposed to wet, heat, cold, quickly changing conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    The position occasionally lifts heavy objects, walks, sits and stands for long periods of time and performs physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects and uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multilimbed coordination. The position requires the ability to move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina.
