Project Engineer

Position Summary

The Project Engineer is required to perform a variety of senior level engineering tasks which are broad in nature and to interact with Clients to accurately interpret Client, organizational and technical requirements based on the information provided.

The Project Engineer role is to provide senior technical consultancy on civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and relay protection and control engineering as dictated by their qualifications and experience.

The Project Engineer’s duties include guiding project team members in formulating requirements and advising on the viability of alternative approaches. They provide input into analysis, feasibility studies, calculations and safety assessments as needed. The Project Engineer’s duties also include the preparation of conceptual engineering plans and conceptual level cost estimates for new, expansion, or upgrades of Substation and Line projects.

Responsibilities

A fully competent engineer in the subject matter or the functional areas of the assignments. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, and adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems. Requires professional experience to assure competence as a professional. Independently performs assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Will supervise and mentor junior engineers or technicians on assigned work.

The Project Engineer will have a working knowledge of the provisions and intents of local and national design codes and standards, building codes, OSHA safety regulations, utility FERC, NERC, and CIP standards as applicable. They may provide input into cost benefit analysis for electric utilities for certain alternative approaches.

The Project Engineer will prepare technical specifications required for services, materials and equipment for the systems and facilities or for other work requested by the Client. They will cooperate in the exchange of information and coordinate the activities of other consultants and Client staff whose work impacts or is impacted by their work. They will review and comment on drawings, specifications and calculations and other documents and data prepared by other consultants, equipment suppliers and Client staff. The Project Engineer may analyze and compare contract and subcontract tenders and tender budget information making recommendations for contract award where required.

The Project Engineer’s role includes the preparation of engineering reports suitable for review by an executive body and with the potential for public review and comment, and to provide expert witness testimony as necessary.

The Project Engineer will have the ability to communicate (both verbally and in writing) and work effectively with team members within their company and their counterparts in the Client organizations. They will be required to analyze technical problems and use engineering knowledge and experience to solve complex problems in new, unique and cost-effective ways all while demonstrating sound judgment, intellectual rigor and constancy.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering for the electric utility sector and expertise in a specific engineering discipline.

• Professional engineering license preferred

• Experience with software commonly used in their field of expertise

• Strong at analyzing, understanding, confirming, and modifying utility design drawings for substation and line projects

• Strong understanding of typical utility equipment and materials / components and their functionality including protection and control, metering, and SCADA

• Strong understanding and ability to support utility project execution from conception and planning to construction and closeout

• Excellent technical, analytical, and organizational skills

• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

• Excellent negotiation and consensus-building skills

• Comfortable and effective working independently, as well as leading and working in teams across functional groups that vary from fundamentally technical to non-technical.

Requirements:

• Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the US for a period exceeding 180 days
