Overview

Southern Glazer’s Operations and Supply Chain function involves management of the physical flow of our products from the original point of manufacturing to the final point of purchase at the retailer. Our structured internship program is designed to expose students to the wine and spirits beverage distribution system and the role Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) plays within our business. Operations functions, and more specifically EHS.

Under the mentorship of the Senior Director, EHS – Southern California, the intern will undertake projects directed at specific topics such as equipment safety, fall protection, occupational ergonomics, powered industrial trucks, environmental compliance, sustainability, and training education. This position is responsible for supporting projects, processes, and programs for EHS, located predominantly in Santa Fe Springs, CA. We seek to attract talented individuals who possess the skills we need to become an industry leader.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with Site Leadership and EHS to assist in day-to-day activities of the department to ensure a safe, healthful, and incident-free work environment.

  • Working closely with the Site Leadership and EHS to set safety standards and make recommendations on related national safety programs for the company.

  • Helping ensure compliance with all state, federal and local governmental safety, health, and environmental regulations.

  • Supporting the site with Fleet Safety and DOT Compliance—address site deficiencies and recommend corrective strategies.

  • Creating and reviewing spreadsheets, reports, messages, presentations, statements, or other related documentation.

  • Perform data entry and general system administration.

  • Shadowing Site Leadership and EHS as well as tour various distribution centers and cross docks.

  • Supporting local teams ranging from production to engineering to provide EHS support to day-to-day operations, conduct safety walkthroughs and audits, deliver safety trainings to employees, participate in investigations of workplace incidents, and help drive corrective actions.

  • Other administrative duties and special projects as assigned.

  • This internship is a wonderful opportunity to learn about EHS and obtain hands-on field experience. It can also be used to satisfy graduate-level practicum and entry-level experience requirements. Placement would start in late May and end early in August of 2024. There is potential for the intern to be offered employment at SGWS depending on job availability and the student’s success in demonstrating their capability in this field.

Additional Primary Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate and graduate student enrolled in a preferred degree– Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental Health & Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Management Information Systems, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • Demonstrates strong leadership, communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills

  • Excellent time management skills to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong technical/professional writing skills preferred

  • Knowledge and skill of Microsoft Office and/or Microsoft Project

  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred

  • Prior EHS, DOT, or Supply Chain internship experience preferred

Physical Demands

  • Physical demands include a considerable amount of time sitting and typing/keyboarding, using a computer (e.g., keyboard, mouse, and monitor), or adding machine

  • Physical demands with activity or condition may occasionally include walking, bending, reaching, standing, and stooping

  • May require occasional lifting/lowering, pushing, carrying, or pulling up to 20lbs
