Burns & McDonnell Assistant Electrical Engineer- Transmission & Distribution, Protection Applications (Minneapolis) in Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota

Description

Our Assistant Protection Applications Engineers are responsible for performing tasks requiring the application of standard electrical engineering techniques and procedures. This includes standard design of electrical systems, assisting lead engineers with various project duties, and other duties as assigned.

Protection Applications

Power system protection of high voltage (13,000 to 500,000 volt) electrical substation equipment, transmission lines, distribution lines, and generation interconnects for a variety of clients across the country.

  • Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports, or project design assignments.

  • Responsible for performing power system studies and system protection settings coordination on various projects (Up to 500-kV voltage level).

  • Develop design basis documentation for protective settings and generate native relay configuration files.

  • Develop native relay setting files using device software

  • Conduct design reviews, and support quality control.

  • Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for the projects.

  • Provide engineering support with construction and commissioning activities for substations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master of Science degree in Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.

  • Previous internship and/or related experience preferred.

  • Basic knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Basic understanding of symmetrical components.

  • Experience in commonly utilized system modelling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.) preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies commonly applied at Transmission, and Distribution substations.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical single lines, three lines, schematics, functional diagrams, etc.

  • Basic knowledge of short circuit calculations, current transformer performance and ratio selection, over-current element coordination, zone-distance element selection and coordination, and relay loadability calculation.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
