Our program participants are motivated to successfully complete high school and attend college following their high school graduation. The goal of the annual Upward Bound Vision Quest Summer Program is to provide participants with a college-going experience. Our program is seeking Classroom Assistants to supervise students while in classes or on field trips during the daytime hours of the 2024 Summer Program. Our 2024 Summer Program will run from June 24 - August 2, 2024. Staff training will be during the week of June 10, 2024 and June 17, 2024. Classroom Assistants are only expected to be available for staff training and Week 1 through Week 5 of the 2024 Summer Program (see the program schedule below for more details). Responsibilities: Supervise, guide, mentor, and give direction to high school UBVQ Summer Program participants during the daytime hours of the Summer Program. Serve as a classroom assistant during Summer Program classes. Support Summer Program teachers with copying, printing, filing, daily attendance, organization, and other tasks as necessary. Chaperone students daily to lunch in the residence hall and enforce the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) during lunch. Chaperone students in the classrooms and monitor hallways during class breaks. Provide tutoring to Summer Program participants as needed and chaperone daytime field trips. Willing and able to chaperone students while riding the bus from the Minneapolis high schools (South and Edison) on Monday mornings, and back to the high schools on Friday afternoons. Chaperone students to Step Up job placements as applicable. Assist with the Residence Hall check-in/check-out process on Mondays and Fridays during the residential weeks of the Summer Program. Maintain tracking and documentation of student behavior and attendance daily. Prepare reports on student behavior and other incidents on a regular basis. Build rapport and display sensitivity towards high school students and staff from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Participate in weekly staff meetings with the UBVQ Director and staff. Participate and complete mandatory staff training in June 2024. Pay Rate: $21/hr Classroom Assistants can expect to work 30-35 hours per week during the Summer Program. The Classroom Assistant will be provided daily lunch while supervising students in the dining hall. 2024 UBVQ Summer Program Schedule: June 13, June 20, June 21 - Summer Staff Training (anticipated dates) June 24-28: Week 1 July 1-July 3: Week 2 Virtual Programming - Classroom Assistants off July 4-5 July 8-12: Week 3 July 15-19: Week 4 July 22-26: Week 5 July 29-August 2: Week 6 Summer Trip (out-of-state) - Classroom Assistants not required to be available Note: All Classroom Assistant positions are Minneapolis-based. Staff must be able to commute to the UMN-TC campus daily. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: * Experience working with high school students from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. * Experience leading a group of students. * Experience and/or comfort with giving directions to students and chaperoning students on field trips. * Able to attend mandatory summer staff training during the week of June 10, 2024 and June 17, 2024. * Full availability to work daytime hours from June 24-July 26, 2024. * Strong communication skills, both in person and through various mediums of technology (e-mail, text, etc.). * Per University of Minnesota Safety of Minors policy, applicant must be at least 20 years old upon hiring. Preferred Qu lifications: * Valid driver's license and willingness to operate a University vehicle. * Familiarity and/or experience with the federal TRIO programs. * Bilingual in Somali or Spanish and experience with language interpretation. * TRIO UBVQ alum who will be entering their sophomore year of college or above in the fall of 2024 are highly encouraged to apply. * Work effectively as a team, and individually. * Classroom Assistants can expect to work 30-35 hours per week during the Summer Program. * Classroom Assistants will be provided daily lunch while supervising students in the dining hall.
