Trane Technologies Senior Modeling Engineer in Minneapolis, Minnesota

We are currently hiring a Senior Modeling Engineer who will create, maintain and improve modeling simulation and data management software applications to support new product and technology development projects in Trane Technologies. The role will also support the use of these applications to troubleshoot, analyze and offer solutions to performance & reliability problems of HVAC components & systems in the lab or field. This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule (3 or more days onsite a week) and will be based out of our Minneapolis, MN - St. Paul, MN or La Crosse, WI office location.

Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with Trane Technologies HVAC Products, including Residential A/Cs and Heat Pumps, Commercial Chillers, Rooftops, Air Handler products and Transport products.

  • Develop 1D components & systems models, including refrigeration system, electrical system and other sub-systems for HVAC & R products.

  • Improve, standardize, and maintain existing in-house steady state component and system models for multiple HVAC & R systems.

  • Improve, standardize, and maintain existing transient component and system models for multiple HVAC&R systems.

  • Well understand varies fluid properties, including refrigerants, coolant, moist air, etc. from standard source to integrate correctly into HVAC&R system, as well as the regulatory requirements in fluid area.

  • Work as component model Subject Matter Expert to lead the development and discussion in related project development from multiple business units.

  • Well understand lab tests and enhance modeling and simulation processes, also capable of leading the lab test design for model validation purpose.

  • Provide guidance and leadership to designers, lab technicians and other team members in modeling context.

  • Oversee and Lead modeling and simulation related communications in Commercial HVAC Chiller and Unitary (North American) business unit, link and merge regional requirements into global requirement pool and participate in strategic development plan of the organization.

  • Well understand the current statues of internal modeling as well as global industrial edge and academic research fields and strength in Commercial HVAC Chiller and Unitary SBU.

  • Scan and screen new technologies in HVAC&R in modeling and simulation context.

  • Work closely with team members, cross-functional associates, and internal customers to gather requirements, provide updates/reports, training to refrigeration engineer, etc.

  • Prepare complete schedules and reports for assigned projects, including presentations to stakeholders.

  • Provide engineering support to the Product Planning and Technical Support Team

  • Coordinate external collaborations for general modeling and simulation fields in North America area.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical (thermal) Engineering, PhD is a plus to this position.

  • 510 years’ experience in air-conditioning / HVAC system product design and modeling

  • Familiar with popular industrial level modeling and simulation tools and platforms, with at least 5 years’ experience to use or develop modeling and simulation related tools.

  • Expertise in the thermal sciences (thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics), gained preferably from experience with HVAC components & systems.

  • Familiar with air conditioning products, such as Residential Split Systems, Commercial Chillers, Rooftops, Air Handlers and Transport Refrigeration.

  • Experience in air conditioning system and component design and optimization.

  • Programming capability desirable. Experience with Fortran, Visual Basic (VBA), C++/C# and Python for understanding existing codes as well as developing new component models in modern languages/scripting platforms.

  • Experience in problem formulation & solution using numerical methods via commercial solvers & custom code required.

  • Project management skills are highly preferred.

  • Experts in Modeling and Simulation methodologies, including different type of HVAC components and systems: heat exchangers, compressors, fans, as well as Chillers, VRF, etc; including Steady state modeling and Transient modeling; also understand the connection between 1D and 3D modeling and simulations.

Base Pay Range: $92,000 to $122,000.
