The position offers the opportunity to interact with physician-scientists and develop skills in a variety of research techniques, experimental approaches and research questions relevant to human health, including primary human cell culture, molecular virology and analysis of multiomics data. The Researcher 6 is expected to design and independently manage one or more research projects. After consultation with the PI on scope, the successful candidate will be expected to identify appropriate methodology, execute experiments, and report results independently. The successful candidate will act as a secondary mentor and supervisor for trainees in the laboratory, assisting them with project design and experiments when appropriate. The researcher will be expected to be able to independently draft manuscript and grant applications and will have opportunities to submit applications for funding as a co-PI or Co-I. Assist with the day-to-day management of the lab, including ordering, compliance, and budget management. Represent the research group scientifically at an international level. Network with other scientific colleagues and help build and maintain collaborations that will drive the research program forward. The candidate in this position will be designated as an Essential Employee. Essential Employees are expected to report to campus during a University State of Emergency (reduced operations or campus closure) unless specifically directed by the Department not to report or if directed by civil emergency or medical authorities not to report for health and safety reasons. As an Essential Employee, the candidate must report to campus even if the closure if less than 3 days. Duties/Responsibilities 60% Experiment design and execution. Development and execute molecular assays for detection of human microbial pathogens (nucleic acid extraction, reverse transcription, PCR, qPCR) Next-generation sequencing (development of hybrid capture assays for respiratory pathogen genome sequencing, 16S rRNA sequencing, 28S/ITS rRNA sequencing) In vitro experimentation in human respiratory tract model systems (propagation of bacterial and/or fungal stocks, air-liquid interface microbial-viral-human cell co-culture systems, organoid culture) Perform in vitro virological assays (preparation and titering of viral stocks, viral infection assays) Perform assay of human immune function (multi-parameter flow cytometry, ELISA) Expand repertoire of fungal studies within the lab 20% Data analysis and manuscript preparation. Independent data analysis and figure preparation Collaborate with PI on manuscript and grant writing. Assist junior scientists with experimental design and troubleshooting and writing projects 20% Lab management and administration. Assist with lab organization Assist with maintenance of lab equipment Supervise junior lab members in specimen kit shipping. receiving and logging in laboratory database for clinical studies (MINNE-LOVE and MINNE-LOVE-2) Supervise junior members of the lab in reagent preparation Co-mentor trainees (undergraduates, graduate students, and fellows) with the PI Supervise inventory and ordering Assist with research compliance (IBC, IRB) Assist with laboratory financial management Qualifications Requi ed Qualifications - Advanced degree (e.g. PhD, MD, DVM) and a substantial research and publication record. - At least 5 years of research experience, including experience in independent project management and supervision and mentorship of junior scientists - Facility with standard molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, reverse transcription, and PCR/qPCR - Strong organizational skills - Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills - Ability to work independently and as a part of a diverse team Preferred Qualifications Experience with lab management - Experience with next-generation sequencing techniques (Oxford Nanopore preferred) - Experience with standard microbial culture techniques (bacterial, fungal) - Familiarity with concepts of microbial phylogeny and associated analysis tools - Familiarity with R and/or Python, ability to perform basic bioinformatic analyses independently and work with more experienced bioinformaticians for more complex analyses - Experience with risk-mitigation strategies for handling potentially infectious human pathogens in a BSL-2 enviroment - Experience with standard mammalian tissue culture techniques - Prior training and experience conducting research involving human subjects or willingness to complete such training (CITI, HIPAA) About the Department University of Minnesota Medical School Committed to innovation and diversity, the Medical School educated physicians, scientists, and health professionals; generates knowledge and treatments; and cares for patients and communities with compassion and respect.
