The MSP LTER brings together dozens of researchers across several universities, nonprofits, and federal agencies to examine how urban stressors affect nature structure and function, including pollinators, urban forests, urban watersheds, and lakes and streams. A critical component of this work is understanding the dynamics and relationships between people, policy, and nature. Environmental policies are implemented heterogeneously across urban areas, resulting in an inequitable distribution of benefits and burdens. This position is situated within one of the core social science teams and focuses on studying the effectiveness of environmental policies and practices at the local level and why some communities choose to adopt policies while others do not. We also study how people and organizations relate to urban nature, how they implement rules and policies, and their role in advocating for improved environmental outcomes. This position is expected to be funded for the May-August 2024 timeframe. As a Researcher 1, the new hire is expected to perform structured research-related work assignments, identify problems and relevant issues in straightforward situations, assess potential responses using standard procedures, and make sound decisions accordingly. The hire will receive instruction, guidance, and direction from the immediate supervisor, Dr. Meghan Klasic, in coordination with other PIs on the team (Drs. Forrest Fleischman and Kristen Nelson). * (40%) Code textual documents (e.g., municipal ordinances and comprehensive plans) using MaxQDA on topics of justice and equity, urban nature, governance and decision-making, and rules and enforcement * (15%) Conduct basic summary analysis of survey data on pollinator preferences/opinions and participation in informal advocacy processes * (15%) Conduct background literature research on relevant topics including urban sustainability, urban nature, civic engagement in environmental decision-making, and environmental advocacy * (10%) Assist in case study interviews with graduate students on municipal priorities and processes of civic engagement * (10%) Contribute to team manuscripts that are being prepared for journal publication.
