Position Details

Wesleyan University’s Department of Religion invites applications for a one-year full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion, beginning on September 1, 2024. The position is for one year and is renewable for a second year depending on performance and the curricular needs of the department. We invite applications from candidates specializing in Black Religion in America, African Religions, or philosophy of religion. We particularly encourage applications from scholars whose work focuses on questions of the intersections of religion with race and/or gender. Historical period and methodological approach are open. Priority will be given to applicants whose areas of expertise do not duplicate existing departmental strengths. The teaching load is 3/2, in person on Wesleyan’s campus. Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college, with a strong and diverse undergraduate student body, that values both scholarship and teaching very highly.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field must be in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in Religious Studies or related field within one year of hire.

In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation.
