Position Summary: Reporting to the designated lieutenant, the Canine Handler Officer is responsible for the full care, management, and training of canines. Additionally, this role involves ensuring the custody and discipline of inmates in accordance with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, Management & Training Corporation (MTC), and Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) directives.

Essential Functions:

  1. Maintain the canine at home when not at work, with full reimbursement for related expenses.
  2. Ensure the drug detection dog receives adequate training, trail testing, and medical care.
  3. Manage and maintain up-to-date canine medical records, including appropriate identification.
  4. Provide comprehensive care and a safe shelter for the canine, covering feeding, water, and grooming.
  5. Conduct narcotics searches using canines both inside and outside the facility, assisting in the detection and processing of individuals introducing contraband.
  6. Oversee inspections and searches, ensuring officers do not interfere with canine responsibilities or contaminate the area.
  7. Maintain control of the canine(s) and ensure safe transportation both on and off duty.
  8. Prepare detailed reports on the status of canines and searches, including rule violation reports.
  9. Testify in hearings and court cases related to drug interdiction activities and searches.
  10. Protect, instruct, train, and counsel assigned employees as directed.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred experience with canine training or handling.
  • Valid driver's license in the state of Mississippi with an acceptable driving record, unless waived by management.

Post-Hire Requirements:

  • Successful completion of annual in-service training requirements.
  • Obtain required certification for canine handler within the specified timeframe.
