AutoZone, Inc. Lead Data Scientist in Memphis, Tennessee

At AutoZone, we rely on insightful data to power our systems and solutions. We’re seeking an experienced data scientist to lead a team of data scientists and work directly with supervisor on a daily basis to formulate plans, approaches, and timelines on how data science expertise will be applied to solve company directives. Our ideal Lead Data Scientist will have project lead experience leading a team. The Lead Data Scientist will have mathematical and statistical expertise, and a natural curiosity and creative mind that’s not so easy to find. As you lead the team, we will rely on you to ask questions, connect the dots, and uncover opportunities that lie hidden within—all with the ultimate goal of realizing the data’s full potential.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead team of Data Scientists that works to solve AutoZone’s most pressing opportunities

• Collaborate with leaders to develop an understanding of needs, develop directives, and manage a team of data scientist to complete the initiatives

• Thorough analysis, building predictive models using machine learning or other means, in support of implementation of new rating plans and other initiatives

• Lead the team to validate, manipulate and perform exploratory data analysis tasks on analytical data sets

• Utilize Python, SAS and other Analytic Computing Environments to work with “big data”

• Research and devise innovative statistical models for data analysis

• Communicate and present findings to all stakeholders and leadership, including the executive committee

• Enable smarter business processes—and implement analytics for meaningful insights

• Keep the team current with technical and industry developments

• Work as the lead data strategist, identifying and integrating new datasets that can be leveraged through our system capabilities and work closely with various teams to strategize and execute the development of products

• Execute analytical experiments methodically to help solve various problems and make a true impact across various domains and industries

• Identify relevant data sources and sets to mine for business needs, and collect large structured and unstructured datasets and variables

• Lead the team to devise and utilize algorithms and models to mine big data stores, perform data and error analysis to improve models, and clean and validate data for uniformity and accuracy

• Analyze data for trends and patterns, and Interpret data with a clear objective in mind

• Implement analytical models into production by collaborating with software developers and machine learning engineers

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in statistics, applied mathematics, Economics or related discipline; Master’s degree preferred

• 10+ years’ experience in data science

• 2+ years’ experience in project management

• Proficiency with data mining, mathematics, and statistical analysis

• Advanced pattern recognition and predictive modeling experience

• Experience with Excel, PowerPoint, Tableau, SQL, and programming languages (i.e., Java, R, Python, SAS)

• Comfort working in a dynamic, research-oriented group with several ongoing concurrent projects
