Salary Grade: NC05 / Recruitment Range: $31,688 - $55,453
This posting is intended to fill a total of (2) Transportation Worker II positions: 60021259 and 60021424. You only need to apply once to be considered for all positions.
This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained highways and interstates within Anson, Cabarrus, Stanly, Mecklenburg & Union counties. This position will report to the Interstate Maintenance Office located in Mecklenburg County. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained highways and interstates. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.

Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
Experience in snow and ice removal operations
Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching
Additional Expectations:
Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employee must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employee must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Safety toe shoes are required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and Post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
