This is Alabama aims to tell the positive news stories coming out of the Yellowhammer State. We highlight the people, places and businesses that are making Alabama a better place to live. This is Alabama has a following of almost 700,000 people across social media brands, and we continue to grow.

We’re seeking a reporter to tell these good news stories. We’re searching for someone naturally curious about finding unique stories and interacting with the audience. If you can write quickly and accurately and love to be the first to break a story, we’d love to hear from you.

You will also be responsible for writing our weekly newsletter – one of Alabama Media Group’s most-read newsletters – that focuses on the positive news stories of the week. You’ll bring voice to the newsletter, engage with readers and help craft it into a personality-driven read.

We’re looking for someone who loves to bring ideas to the table and doesn’t just want to take assignments. We want you to constantly seek ideas that fit This is Alabama.

This role is based in Alabama and the exact location is flexible.

This is Alabama is part of Alabama Media Group and you’ll work closely with the AL.com team. Your articles will publish to AL.com, which is one of the largest local news sites in the country.

Job requirements:

  • Degree in journalism, English, communications or equivalent education and related work experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing.

  • Two or more years’ experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience.

  • Ability to write compelling stories about the people, businesses, innovators, natural wonders food and start-ups that make Alabama a great place to live.

  • Write, edit and promote our weekly newsletter. You should be constantly thinking of new ways to promote the newsletter and interact with the audience.

  • Help monitor social media, conceptualize videos and brainstorm new ideas for the company.

  • This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events.

We’re looking for a candidate who:

  • Can manage time wisely and write on deadline.

  • Can shift gears easily and switch from evergreen content to breaking news immediately.

  • Knows AP style and writes clean copy.

  • Enjoys collaboration.

  • Can source story ideas from social media.

  • Is comfortable promoting their work on social media and to the community.
