Department Summary:

MITRE’s Data Science department (L172) is looking for qualified applicants to bring their machine learning, advanced analytics, and applied research skills to bear on solving problems of critical national importance. MITRE’s diverse work program provides opportunities to apply your expertise and creative thinking in challenging domains such as healthcare, transportation, and national security. Employees may also participate in MITRE’s internal research and development program, which provides funding for innovative applied research that addresses our sponsors’ hardest problems.

Job Description:

The successful candidate for this position is a data scientist who combines a solid theoretical and technical background with the ability to formulate problems, design and evaluate solutions, implement hands-on solutions, and communicate results to a variety of audiences. Familiarity with advanced data science techniques and methods (e.g., supervised and unsupervised machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning) is a plus. Hands-on software development skills are a must. Our organization values innovation and lifelong learning and believes that in today’s fast-paced technological environment keeping up with the latest research and technologies is an essential part of working in this field. Candidate must

  • Apply a variety of data science techniques to tackle customer challenges to include machine learning, generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, reinforcement learning, statistical modeling, mathematical optimization, and data visualization.

  • Apply data science rigor throughout the machine learning lifecycle to ensure reproducibility and trustworthiness.

  • Develop, test and evaluate, and demonstrate data science and machine learning solutions.

  • Build and test prototypes in on-premises (e.g. VMWare, Linux-based platforms) and commercial cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure)..

  • Apply state of the art techniques using programming languages and development environments to drive advances in mission capabilities for MITRE sponsors.

  • Provide technical leadership on projects, either to junior staff or as a member of team as a stand-alone senior subject matter expert

  • Translate complex results into actionable recommendations that can be understood by senior leadership and non-technical audiences.

  • Have strong technical writing and presentation skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or 3 years of hands-on relevant experience using data science techniques, including statistical analysis, mathematical optimization, machine learning, deep learning, or reinforcement learning with a PhD.

  • Experience using existing AI framework (e.g., TensorFlow, Caffe, Cognitive Toolkit, Torch)

  • Proficient in Python and SQL

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field

  • Knowledge or experience with trusted machine learning

  • Experience applying deep learning techniques

  • Knowledge of MLOps, particularly in the AWS environment

  • Possess an active US Government clearance
