Department Summary:

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) IT Transformation Department (P822) is seeking a motivated and creative Artificial Intelligence Engineer with both technical and functional experience relevant to our department work programs. P822 provides robotic processing engineering (RPA), intelligent automation (IA) and artificial intelligence (AI) expertise primarily to the IRS, and as directed, to other federal agencies under the FFRDC Center for Government Effectiveness and Modernization (CGEM). The AI Engineer supports the IRS in navigating and implementing the full gamut of RPA, iA and AI technologies and processes, including conceptualization, design, development and operations. We help our sponsors solve critical RPA, IA and AI challenges while serving as their thought leader and trusted advisor.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Builds, deploys, implements and/or modifies machine intelligence applications, including digital agents (e.g., chatbots), pattern recognition applications, (e.g., image, text, speech recognition) and classification

  • Employs a combination of dataflow programming or pre-trained algorithms from an existing AI framework (e.g., TensorFlow, Caffe, MXNet, Cognitive Toolkit, Torch) but may also develop own scripts and algorithms in C++, Go, Java, Python, or equivalent languages

  • Adapts artificial intelligence, including machine learning, to areas such as virtual/augmented reality, robotics, command and control, decision support, planning and other areas.

  • Serves as RPA, IA, and/or AI Project Leader across a diverse portfolio of IRS sponsors

  • Establishes and nurtures lasting relationships with IRS sponsors, acting as thought leader and trusted advisor

    Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • Demonstrated experience with the design, development, and implementation of RPA, IA, and/or AI solutions

  • Demonstrated experience in the delivery of omnichannel chatbots in support of IRS call or contact centers, including telephony integration services

  • Demonstrated experience with the design, development, and implementation of large language models (LLMs) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities

  • Demonstrated ability to implement an AI framework (e.g., TensorFlow, Caffe, MXNet, Cognitive Toolkit, Torch) and/or develop own scripts and algorithms in C++, Go, Java, Python, or equivalent languages.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish an RPA, IA, AI sandbox environment to conduct proofs of concept or pilots

  • Demonstrated ability to implement RPA technologies such as UiPath and Pega RPA

  • Keen analytical insight with the ability to create and communicate feasible recommendations to the sponsor across RPA, IA, and AI technologies

  • Project leadership, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills

  • Self-motivated, curious, and collaborative, with a passion to learn new technologies and develop new skills

  • Ability to obtain an IRS Suitability (Minimum Background Investigation)

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with IRS RPA, IA, and/or AI solution implementation

  • Experience with IRS organizations and supporting sponsors

  • Active IRS Clearance (Minimum Background Investigation)
