POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: CHIEF PLANT OPERATOR

DUTIES

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The essential function of the position within the organization is to oversee water plant operations and to schedule work shifts of plant operators. The position is responsible for managing process controls to comply with DEQ standards and to ensure the City water supply is safe for drinking.

PRIMARY DUTIES: This list represents the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.

Performs all tests and labs associated with drinking water.

Ensures equipment is maintained in working order. Schedule major and minor repairs and maintenance with plant mechanics, contractors, and other city departments.

Assists in all plant maintenance.

Prepares and keeps records of required tests, prepare and/or proofread daily monitoring reports. Understands and fully complete MORs and DMRs and all methods of reporting to ODEQ and other regulatory agencies.

Manage process controls to comply with DEQ rules and regulations.

Schedule and oversee the collection of samples to be tested in house as well as sent to contract labs.

Keep superintendent informed of plant conditions, employee problems and all potential problems.

Schedule and supervise work of the operators; Schedule leave time for plant operators and keep track of all leave time.

Maintain quality control program for in house laboratories.

Implement and maintain SOP\'s for plant and laboratory.

Request price quotes from vendors and fill out purchase requests and place orders for laboratory and maintenance supplies.

Train new plant operators and lab techs.

Operate water plant as needed including backwashing filters, adjusting chemical dosage rates, etc.

Order chemicals and supplies for the water plant and make process changes as needed to keep the water plant operating properly.

Understands and has the ability to maintain components of water distribution systems such as water towers, booster stations, chemical injection points.

Understands and has ability to troubleshoot SCADA and other forms of equipment communication.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Mathematics deals with quantities, magnitudes, and forms and their relationships and attributes by the use of numbers and symbols.

Uses basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas, and volumes and/or computing discounts and interest rates.
