Baffinland Iron Mine Environmental Technician - Contract - Fixed Term in Mary River, Territory of Nunavut

Reporting to the Environmental Coordinator, the Contract Environmental Technician works closely with other environmental technicians and field staff to conduct field monitoring and sampling programs. They will also assist with environment compliance monitoring for site operations with associated analyses and data management, as well as construction monitoring. This role will also will provide support to the rest of the Environmental group as needed in the field.This role requires work outdoors, potentially in inclement weather conditions up to 75% of the time. The job can be physically demanding and it requires walking long distances, lifting of objects up to 50 pounds and getting in and out of vehicles frequently. this role will be offered as a fixed term. This is a site base role on a 3 week in and 3 week out rotation. We welcome the application of university students with this field of study.

Main Accountabilities

• Conducting field monitoring and sampling programs as required under existing permits, licenses, and the company's Environmental Management System (including surface, lake and ground water, effluent, soil and dust fall sampling).

• Assisting with internal due diligence compliance inspections of various site facilities and operational activities

• Participating/ assisting with environmental baseline studies, fish habitat monitoring, erosion and sediment control measures, and active migratory bird nest surveys

• Assisting with spill prevention and spill response and filling out pertinent forms related to environmental spills and incidents and follow-up.

• Operation of basic hand tools, boat motors and snow mobiles as trained to do so

• Maintaining detailed and comprehensive field notes.

• Calibrating, installing and maintaining sampling and monitoring equipment.

• Conducting field and in-house lab analyses of field samples using on-site portable analyzers and meters

• Use EQuIS software for field data collection, creation of chain of custodies, processing, packing, and preparing samples for shipment.

• Entering collected field and laboratory data, photos and inspections into the environmental database.

• Filing environmental field notes and data as required

• Other technical field and office tasks to support the environmental and site operations groups.

Main Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled or a recent graduate of a College Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or environmental monitoring, engineering or related program.

  • minimum of 1 year experience in construction, mining or oil and gas industry under the environmental discipline

  • Valid Provincial or Territorial driver’s license required

  • Fire Arms Certificate (FAC) or Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) (or willingness to apply for) is an asset

  • Training or experience with water and effluent monitoring, sampling, and field level analytical techniques required.

  • Experience operating outboard motors, boats, snowmobiles and GPS required, and water sampling equipment. Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is an asset

  • Northern/Arctic experience, experience working in inclement weather for extended durations

  • Ability to actively participate in a team, encourage co-operation, and be aware of the needs of others. Ability to share information and support other team members, and prioritise team goals over individual goals.

  • Ability to be precise and minimize errors to ensure high-quality outcomes.

  • Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritize tasks to ensure that work is completed effectively and deadlines are met.

  • Knowledge of digital tools and technology. Proficient with standard office software such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
