POSITION SUMMARY:

 

This position will report to the QA Manager with a dotted line to the Manager, NDT Processes and will be responsible for performing advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on freight and tank car equipment in accordance with approved procedures using approved equipment and methods, as well as, supervising employees performing the basic NDT inspections performed at the shop. The results of these inspections will be accurately communicated through reporting and direct communication with the Quality Assurance Manager and appropriate staff at the facility. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively both verbal and written and can achieve certification in various NDT and Special Processes to support facility activities.

 

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

• Supervises and audits NDT work being performed by hourly employees.

• Performs advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on freight and tank car equipment.

• Ensures all inspections are performed in a manner and released product meets all regulatory, company and customer requirements.

• Ensures the required and most effective NDT methods and techniques are utilized and performed in accordance with established procedures and programs.

• Responsible for NDT equipment calibration, are maintained, and operational.

• Provides technical guidance, hands-on training and mentoring of other NDT staff.

• Ensures all required documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner.

• Strives to maintain proficiency by updating technical knowledge of NDT and other Special Processes.

 

SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:

 

• Ability to communicate technical information verbally and written.

• Ability to understand and apply the various procedures, techniques, and acceptance criteria required to inspect and qualify freight and tank cars and their components.

• Understanding of basic industrial safety practices.

• Must be able to enter tank car tanks through manway openings of 18" to 20" in diameter and work within confined space safety requirements.

• Ability to effectively use electronic systems (including assets on mobile, tablet and PC platforms).

• Must be able to carry and position inspection equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Must have vision that is correctable to the equivalent of 20/20.

• Ability to accurately and legibly complete documents and reports.

 

 

The incumbent works to meet internal and external customer expectations at all times by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projects. In addition, the incumbent is required to understand the Responsible Care Management System and actively participate in activities outlined therein.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

• High School diploma or equivalent required. Technical / Post-Secondary education a plus.

• Minimum of 5-7 years of related work experience in railcar repair or manufacturing. 

• Having held previous certification or having completed the required classroom and experience hours required for certification by one of the following recognized programs; American Association of Railroads MSRP C-III, Appendix T, American Society of Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT)-SNT-TC1A, or ACCP, American National Standards Institute (ANSI/ASNT) CP-189, or International Standards Organization (ISO) 9712 in one or more of the following methods: Leak Testing (LT), Penetrant Testing (PT), Magn
