Job Description

Supports clinical team throughout surgical procedures. Performs scrub assistant duties, facilitates room setup, assists clinicians during procedures, participates in room turnover and maintains technical equipment.

Job Responsibility

  • Performs scrub assistant role for surgical procedures, also performs pre-surgical scrubbing and donning of sterile gown and gloves for self, surgeons, residents and related clinical staff.

  • Strictly follows sterile techniques in scrub assistant role and facilitates delivery/operating room setup based on procedure to be performed, passes instruments to surgeons and clinical support staff, as required as well as performs activities during procedure to maintain patient hygiene.

  • Ensures room is clean and stocked with required supplies including medicine cart items, as well as assembles sterile and non-sterile calibrated, technical equipment.

  • Sets-up infant warmers, resuscitation equipment, etc.

  • Participates in surgical instrument counts with clinical professional, follows procedural guidelines for incorrect counts, as required, documents counts in electronic medical record and opens sterile packs and performs surgical tray setup of instruments, sponges, needles, etc.

  • Assists clinical staff during procedure and maintains aseptic technique and quality control throughout case, assists in applying sterile drapes to patients in preparation for procedure as well as participates in patient identification and time-outs, ensuring correct patient, surgical site, procedure and equipment prior to start of case.

  • Communicates and documents results in electronic medical record.

  • Requires competency.

  • Brings attention to and initiates corrective action if breaks in sterile technique occur and performs instrument counts during and after procedure.

  • Takes appropriate corrective action if incorrect counts occur to ensure patient safety.

  • Participates in post-procedure delivery/operating room turnover and strips beds, tables and stretchers in preparation for cleaning as well as removes dirty instruments and prepares for distribution to central sterile as well as ensures technical equipment is functioning and maintained.

  • Confirms Biomedical inspection of all related technical equipment and checks and/or troubleshoots equipment for proper functioning as well as reports missing or broken equipment and need for new equipment to clinical supervisor.

This position is eligible for a $10,000 tuition repayment program.

Job Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification required, plus specialized certifications as needed.

  • 0-1 years of technical experience, required.

The salary range for this position is $33.13-$44.77/hour
