The Mobility Technician, under the direction of the department of rehabilitation in partnership with nursing unit leadership, assists with patient care related activities to improve and enhance the mobility of patients in an acute care hospital setting.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Mobility Technician can be described as:

  • Works collaboratively with physical therapy, nursing teams, and other healthcare professionals to meet the needs of the patient within the scope of this role.

  • Provide patient care based on physical, psychosocial, education, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service.

  • Provide for effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment, and critical actions.

  • Develops rapport and mutual respect with patients and foster an optimal environment for goal achievement.

  • Works to promote a culture of mobility with the care team.

  • Independently provide direct hands-on patient care to safely mobilize patients, and educate families/caregiver on mobility techniques to facilitate discharge to the home setting.

  • Responsible for assisting in ongoing patient mobility including transfers, ambulation of patients and facilitation of exercise groups.

  • Models and maintains a safe environment in which to deliver service and employs correct body mechanics during activities.

  • Monitor/measure vital signs (pulse, respirations, blood pressure and O2 saturation) at the discretion of the leader and document findings in patient record; notify RN immediately of abnormal results.

  • Uses CPR (basic life support) skills when required.

  • Ongoing communication with nursing, rehabilitation and other members of the health care team regarding patient mobility status and patient outcomes; tracks clinical outcomes as directed.

  • Completes associated documentation.

  • Notifies nursing of unsafe conditions and handles emergency situations in an appropriate manner.

  • Practices OSHA safety standards.

  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.

  • Basic math, medical terminology, and literacy skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Google Suite platforms and EPIC.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant Program, Patient Care Technician Program or health sciences program preferred.

  • Minimum of 1 year or more of experience in health care is preferred.

  • Minimum of 1 or more years of experience in customer service or patient care preferred.

  • Possess knowledge of common hospital equipment used in patient care.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification
