Description

The Maize Special Education Cooperative is seeking a registered nurse to support students in the

Life Skills classroom at Garden Plain High School. This position will work when the Renwick

School District is in session and 13 additional days. Enjoy summers and school breaks off.

Overview

The Burse supports the instructional program with specific responsibilities for assessing the

health needs of special education students; developing emergency care plans and individual

health plans, incorporating input from parents and physicians; complying with laws relating to

student health, including parental and guardian consent; providing appropriate care for ill,

medically fragile, and injured students as specified by individual education plans; providing

health information and serving as a resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and

identifying health problems for referral for proper treatment.

Functions

1. Acknowledges medical conditions and provides appropriate care for ill, medically fragile,

and injured children

2. Administers first aid, medication, and specialized medical procedures (e.g. oral

suctioning, catheterization, tracheostomy care, diabetes management, colostomy care,

etc.)

3. Assesses situations involving students\' safety (e.g. physical abuse, use of illegal

substances, etc.) to identify problems, refer for proper treatment, and comply with legal

requirements

4. Assists classroom teachers with age appropriate health education programs and activities

in conjunction with classroom curriculum (e.g. hygiene, nutrition, dental, etc.)

5. Collaborates with a variety of stakeholders (e.g. parents, students, health care providers,

public agencies, etc.) to promote and secure student health services, provide

information, and comply with legal requirements

6. Develops and implements health care plans for special education students with chronic

health related needs

7. Provides direction to site personnel and implements medical orders provided by

physicians

8. Maintains confidential files and records of students (e.g. health care plans, agency

referrals, accident reports, immunization records, etc.)

9. Maintains contact with parents and guardians and advises of changes in student health

and/or makes recommendations for further medical and emotional intervention

10. Monitors students for illness and injury and attends to immediate health care concerns,

providing follow-up care as necessary

11. Refers students requiring additional medical attention to support the provision of required

follow-up treatment and services

12. Monitors students with chronic illnesses and assists the student in achieving the highest

possible functional level

13. Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. workshops, in-services, staff meetings, etc.) for

the purpose of gathering, conveying, and sharing information on students\' health needs,

service delivery, and educational programs while improving skills and knowledge

14. Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. activity logs, correspondence, memos,

health care plans, reports, etc.)

15. Provides training on a variety of health related subjects (e.g. CPR, food allergies,

hygiene, medical procedures, safety measures, etc.) and acts as a resource to students,

teachers, and other school personnel

16. Administers mandated screenings (e.g. vision, hearing, etc.)

17. Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator(s) and appropriate agenci es

(e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) to ensure a

positive learning environment

18. Researches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care (e.g. wellness,

nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases, etc.) to provide information to staff,

students, parents, and the public

19. Responds to emergency medical situations and ensures appropriate medical attention

and any related follow-up action

20. Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning

of the work unit
