Location:Meriter Hospital Job Description: The Switchboard Operator is the main information resource for facilitates communication between all Meriter customers, including physicians, patients, staff, and the general public. The operator provides first response for all hospital emergencies and functions as the after-hour call center for Meriter clinics.

Essential functions/responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Displaying extensive knowledge of the entire hospital and basic knowledge of the responsibilities of each department

  • Relate to and assist callers in finding a patient, physician, or department in a timely but pleasant manner

  • Answer the hospital emergency line (5555) in a timely manner (2-3 rings)

  • Monitor and quickly respond to several alarm systems (Fire, Medical Emergency, Door/Panic alarms, gas alarms, weather radio, etc)

  • Strictly follow protocol for all emergency procedures

  • Distinguish urgent calls from less urgent calls and prioritize service response

  • Contact local fire, police, and emergency rescue departments as needed, conveying vital information regarding emergency situations

  • Respond to calls on the security radio system and dispatch security as needed

  • Triage calls for Meriter Home health and Meriter Medical Group clinics and physicians after hours

  • Contact on-call staff when appropriate

  • Relay critical information to on-call staff member

    Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 1-2 years’ experience as a Secretary/Receptionist in a busy public office

  • 1 year computer experience

  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

  • Proficient computer and keyboarding skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Excellent grammar, spelling, and word pronunciation/enunciation

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Excellent listening, analytical, and organizational skills

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
