Completion of this 61 credit program leads to an Associate's degree and eligibility to take the Certified Surgical Technologist exam (CST) - From the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

  • Tuition is covered by SSM Health

  • Work at SSM health in a part time position (min 20 hours per week) while attending classes

Requirements:

  • Reliable transportation for commuting to Madison College and St. Mary's hospital for training

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of 2 semesters of high school Chemistry or 1 semester college level Chemistry with a passing grade of C or above

  • Acceptable Accuplacer or ACT scores in Math, Writing and Reading

  • Meet admissions criteria for MC

  • Meet onboarding and employee health requirements for SSM Health

Your obligations:

  • Attend all classes and complete coursework required by the college

  • Satisfactory progress towards graduation

  • 24 months of employment with SSM, working a minimum of 24 hours per week (after completion of the program)

  • Working On Call and weekend shifts as scheduled

  • Register for and pass the licensing exam

  • Cost of Scrubs

Job Summary:

Provide surgical tech care to patients within the student scope of practice under the direct supervision of surgical technologist preceptor or registered nurse.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Practices and implements the technical components of patient care.

  • Practices the preparation of equipment, supplies and resource needed based on the patient's plan of care.

  • Practices accurate and timely communication of information to the Registered Nurse regarding patients in their care.

  • Practices the correct handling and labeling of all specimens.

  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Currently enrolled in a surgical technologist training program

EXPERIENCE

  • No experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships and to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Constant use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Constant lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Constant standing and walking.

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.

  • Frequent lifting/moving patients.

  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching and gripping.

  • Frequent use of clear vision at 20 inches or less.

  • Frequent use of speech to share information through oral communication.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing over 50 lbs.

  • Occasional use of clear vision at 20 feet or more.

  • Occasional use of sitting, squatting, twisting and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

  • Occasional keyboard use/data entry.

  • Rare kneeling.
