Summary

The Lyons Evaporation Plant produces salt products by solution mining and a mechanical evaporation process. Granulated food grade salt is conveyed to the Refinery Mill where the salt is cooled, screened, mixed with other ingredients, and/or compacted to manufacture a variety of products for food, animal feed, chemical, and industrial markets. These salt products are packaged, stored in a warehouse, and shipped in various forms. The basic function of this role is to provide engineering support and seek continuous improvement in health and safety, environmental compliance, quality, productivity, efficiency and maintenance aspects of the refinery mill, packaging and shipping departments of the Lyons Evaporation Plant.

Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide technical support and expertise for safe, compliant, efficient and profitable operations.

  • Actively participate in Continuous Improvement Process (CIP), Management of Change (MOC), and Reliable Asset Management (RAM) activities.

  • Work with operations and maintenance to improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE = Availability X Utilization).

  • Identify maintenance requirements and set standards for equipment purchase, operation and maintenance.

  • Analyze production data to identify and prioritize improvement opportunities.

  • Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

  • Work with operations and maintenance to optimize Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Preventative Maintenance plans (PM’s).

  • Develop ideas and seek new technologies to continuously improve the plant.

  • Prepare and submit capital appropriation requests, including well developed and technically correct scope, engineering design, project costs and schedule, and operational and financial analysis.

  • Manage projects from conception through justification, design, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning.

  • Participate in the development of budgets, forecasts and strategic plans.

  • Manage compliance with the facility’s air permit and assist with other environmental compliance tasks.

  • Complete required monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual environmental reports and inspections.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Computer Skills

  • Competent windows-based computer skills, especially spreadsheet skills, required. Statistical software and CAD experience preferred.

Engineering, Mathematical and Reasoning Ability Skills

  • Ability to apply engineering concepts such as basic physics, mechanics of materials, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.

  • Proficient in basic computational and statistical practices.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Communication/Language Skills

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Ability to effectively communicate on specifications for equipment needs. Ability to write routine reports, develop standard operating procedures for operators to follow, and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before management. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering or related engineering field required.

  • Education or experience in food processing and/or bulk materials handling preferred.

  • Experience preferred, but not required.
