BWXT is currently seeking a Test and Operations Engineer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA!

BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, develops, and tests innovative new nuclear reactors, medical radioisotope production systems, and data science and advanced manufacturing techniques for leading-edge applications.

Our Test and Operations Engineers work on first-of-a-kind reactor plants and prototypes to accomplish acceptance and verification testing programs. You’ll be part of the Verification Testing Team responsible for evaluating reactor plant designs, determining required tests, preparing test procedures, and performing tests and reactor plant operations. Our team works closely with the R&D group and partner organizations to plan and execute comprehensive test programs to exhaustively test new platforms and provide proof-of-concepts for innovative new technologies and reactor plant designs. Test and Operations Engineers working at BWXT Advanced Technologies have the unique opportunity to participate in test and operational activities of novel reactor plants from cradle to grave, and the position is ideal for candidates motivated by a vision of innovation and transformation.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Assess reactor plant and system designs to determine required tests and demonstration activities.

  • Work together with BWXT Advanced Technologies R&D engineers, as well as external customers and partner organizations, to develop factory acceptance and verification testing programs.

  • Coordinate with customers and partner organizations to ensure planned testing will meet their needs.

  • Prepare test documents which satisfy customer requirements and accomplish acceptance testing of components, systems, and reactor plants.

  • Design or support the design and fabrication of test equipment.

  • Perform testing and operational verifications of prototype components, systems, and plants, in adherence to formal written instructions and test procedures.

  • Analyze test results and determine if the executed tests met the objectives.

  • Prepare test reports.

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Nuclear, Electrical, or similar discipline) is required.

  • A minimum of four (4) years of work experience in a related field is required. PhD may substitute for experience.

  • Must possess a technical background in system testing and/or operations.

  • Must be able to work and coordinate well with multiple intercompany and external organizations.

  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be able to self-direct with minimal day-to-day supervision.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Additional Desired Skillsets:

  • Experience with the operation and testing of fluid systems and instrumentation and control for nuclear applications.

  • A technical background in engineering design is preferred.

  • Experience with disciplined operations is preferred.

  • Experience with instrumentation and control systems and automation.

  • Hands on experience with building and operating of test setups and equipment.

  • Active DOD or DOE security clearance.

The base salary range for this position in [[stateProvince]] at the start of employment is expected to be between $[[custsalaryMin]] and $[[custsalaryMax]] per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
