Health Unit Coordinator, Unit B-Insight

Full Time, 72 Hours per pay period, Day Shift

Unit B

Unit B is an 87-bed unit, divided into two separate “Tracks.” Track 1 is a 44-bed area that cares primarily for adult patients with mood disorders and/or chemical dependency issues. Track 2 is a 43-bed area that cares primarily for adult patients with thought disorders and/or chemical dependency issues. Unit B is a busy and exciting area to work where you will be exposed to patients dealing with a wide variety of psychiatric conditions. Staff may also work on other units in the hospital, offering the opportunity to work with many different types of patients. The care team consists of physicians, therapists, discharge planners, registered nurses, psychiatric technicians, and others who work together to develop a comprehensive treatment outline and care plan. We have a great team on the unit who all work together to provide excellent care for our patients in a safe, therapeutic environment.This unit creates a 6-week schedule which is released two weeks before the schedule starts. Staff preferences are considered and may be accommodated when they align with the overall staffing needs of the unit and facility.

Position Summary:

Assists Nursing and Clinical Staff by performing secretarial and unit management duties. Maintains patient records, keeping them and their filing current and in good presentation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist by performing secretarial and receptionist duties:

  • Answers phones, takes and relays messages in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Transcribes and processes all orders.

  • Prioritizes transcription, checks all charts immediately for stat orders and transcribes them first.

  • Notifies nursing staff of stat and now orders.

  • Transfers all new orders to MAR and Kardex.

  • Checks for notation of allergies and transfers information on allergy record to MAR and front of chart.

  • Keeps unit neat and orderly.

  • Coordinates the element of patient care concerning the communication of different disciplines involved in his/her care.

  • Assist with admissions by:

  • Assembles chart in proper order;

  • Stamps all sheets with addressograph plate;

  • Fills out MAR and Kardex;

  • Transcribes and processes physician orders;

  • Sees that routine laboratory work is ordered.

  • Assists with discharge by:

  • Breaking down charts and putting in proper order for Medical Records; and

  • Checks all forms for addressograph stamp before sending to Medical Records.

  • Prevents chart overflow by reducing chart when needed. When reducing chart, notes date, time, initials and amount.

  • Reorders supplies as needed and checks stock frequently.

  • Keeps all forms stocked in adequate amounts.

  • Fills out daily census reports, including admissions and discharges.

  • Keep charts stocked with progress notes and physician orders.

  • Assists the nursing staff with scheduling of appointments.

  • Possesses the physical and emotional capability and stability to perform the functions of the position.

  • Maintains a clean, safe environment. Reports any safety hazards.

  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures and internal/external procedures.

  • Takes action on the basis of quality monitoring results to improve quality of care on the unit.

  • Establishes and maintains good rapport and working relationships to foster intra-interdepartmental communications necessary for the delivery of quality patient care.

  • Practices telephone courtesy concerning requests for information.

  • Understands the confidential nature of all patient and hospital-related activities with particular emphasis on the sensitivity of patient charts.

  • Provides direction to patients, families and visitors in a concise, informative manner keeping a positive, courteous tone.

  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to prioritize all assignments on a continual basis.

  • Performs routine assignments independently. Seeks direction when indicated for unusual or non-routine duties.

  • Advises appropriate personnel of situations requiring nursing expertise or technical follow-up.

  • Respects the Village Sick Leave Policy and guards against the abuse or indiscriminate use of sick leave whether on a paid or unpaid basis.

  • Provides proper notification of absence or tardiness.

  • Takes corrective action to prevent recurring absences.

  • Performs and completes all assignments while providing a consistent quality and quantity of work.

  • Other duties as assigned where training and experience permit.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Preference may be given to individuals possessing a HS diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience:

Prior healthcare experience preferred. Completion of Health Unit Coordinator Curriculum within two weeks of hire required. CPOE training and on-the-job training with an experienced HUC preferred.
