POSITION SUMMARY

The University of Southern California (USC) Libraries seek an innovative, service-oriented librarian to develop library services across the disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Reporting to the Head of Education and Social Work Library Services, the successful candidate will have the initiative and commitment to develop transformative research services and disciplinary outreach geared toward current and emerging research and pedagogical needs in the social and behavioral sciences, and in support of the USC Libraries vision, mission, values, and initiatives.

This position requires a commitment to developing student-focused services and a combination of skills and confidence that will contribute to instruction, outreach, reference, and collections at USC Libraries. We seek candidates motivated by a passion to develop transformative library services and invested in the future of librarianship. The successful candidate is expected to be creative in identifying and solving problems within a collegial and collaborative environment. The successful candidate must be knowledgeable of current relevant library and scholarly information trends and practices, and be able to apply this understanding to make a significant, positive impact on the USC community. Duties include weekend and evening hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Reporting to the Head of Education and Social Work Library Services, the Social and Behavioral Sciences Librarian will:

  • Provide instruction, research consultations and outreach services to students, faculty and staff in assigned areas within the social and behavioral sciences

  • Contribute to the creation, development, and delivery of disciplinary workshops, tutorials, and on-line research guides

  • Work collaboratively with librarians, faculty, and students on emerging social science research methodologies, such as systematic reviews and evidence-based research syntheses

  • Provide oversight of library collections in assigned subject areas

  • Participate in the USC Libraries reference, orientation and instruction programs

  • Engage in professional and/or subject discipline organizations, research, or publishing that will have a significant, positive impact on the USC Libraries strategic plan, and advance the University’s strategic plan and vision

  • Provide evening and weekend services

  • Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications:MLS from an ALA-accredited program or non-U.S. equivalent is typically required for a librarian appointment at USC. In addition, candidates must provide examples of:

  • A bachelors in the social/behavioral sciences or the sciences

  • At least 2 years experience in providing research, instruction, or outreach services to students and faculty in an academic or research library setting

  • Demonstrated understanding of the evolving information management needs and research methods in the social/behavioral sciences

  • A strong commitment to a user-centered public service within an academic, or research library setting

  • Demonstrated commitment to working closely with faculty in support of their research and instructional needs

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

  • Knowledge of current professional trends in librarianship, especially those relating to reference, instructional services and collection development to a diverse population on and off-campus

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Graduate or professional degree in the social/behavioral sciences

  • Experience using information literacy standards and frameworks to improve learning outcomes

  • Knowledge of instructional technology to improve learning outcomes.

Librarians at USC have faculty status. This is a full-time, continuing appointment track position. Appointment to the continuing appointment track requires the potential to meet the University’s criteria for granting continuing appointment – excellence in librarianship – which librarians achieve by having a significant impact on the development and/or implementation of high quality collections and/or services. Additionally, librarians must demonstrate the expectation of continued excellence and growth in professional expertise. Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
