Overview of Department & Mentor

Dr. Ebinger is the Director of Cardiac Critical Care and the Director of Clinical Analytics in the Smidt Heart Institute. His NIH funded work focuses on leveraging clinically generated data to identify opportunities to improve the value of cardiovascular care and using implementation science principles to study the development and integration of novel interventions into clinical workflows.

Student will work with Dr. Ebinger in his office on the 3rd floor of the PACT Building.

Role Summary & Objectives

This research project will evaluate the influence of atrial fibrillation (AF) duration on treatment effectiveness and

choice of modalities, The researcher will be investigating how the length of time a patient has been experiencing AF

impacts the success rates and recurrence rates of various treatment strategies. Under faculty supervision, the researcher

will conduct a comprehensive review of recent clinical studies and patient data to analyze outcomes of both

pharmacological and electrical cardioversion in relation to AF duration. The research phase will involve

collecting data from medical records, identifying patient cohorts based on AF duration, and performing

statistical analyses to compare the effectiveness of different treatment modalities. The researcher will also explore how the

duration of AF affects the choice between pharmacological and electrical cardioversion. In the final project, the researcher

will present the findings, emphasizing how understanding the relationship between AF duration and

treatment outcomes can help optimize therapeutic strategies and improve patient prognosis. The approach

will include detailed analysis, data visualization, and evidence-based recommendations for clinical practice.

Role Activities & Timeline

Week 1 – Training and Orientation

Weeks 2-5 – Data abstraction and cleaning

Remainer of Quarter – Data analysis and abstract writing

Throughout course, weekly meetings with Dr. Ramireddy or Dr. Ebinger cover study design, data analysis, researcher presentation, and basics of statistical analysis.

Required Education & Experience

•Must be 18 years of age or older.

•Must have a HS Diploma or GED.

•Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.

•INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship.

•VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
