Para Los Ninos Nurse II ( Hybrid ) in Los Angeles, California

Position Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Health and Nutrition Coordinator, the Nurse ensures the timely and effective delivery and documentation of health-related services to Para Los Nios EHS/HS children and families. The nurse will be expected to collaborate with outside health professionals to establish partnerships that can support children and families to receive all necessary medical and dental services and documentation.

Duties Guiding Philosophy

  • Carries out the Mission, Vision, and Values established by the President/CEO and Board of Directors of Para Los Nios.
  • Carries out Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards, requirements of the Head Start/Early Head Start Act, and the requirements of the LACOE contract.
  • Always adheres to professional conduct at all times (e.g., proper tone and language use in the classrooms/site, respectful, proper for children, parents, and peers at all times.
  • Attends/participates in: 1) Professional Development Activities, 2) Supervision, and 3) Individualized Professional Development Goals/Activities.

Essential Functions: Health Services and Monitoring

  • Ensure PLN EHS/HS complies with the health and safety-related regulations in the Head Start/Early Head Start Act and Performance Standards and mandates in the LACOE GIMS.
  • Ensure PLN Head Start/Early Head Start complies with the health and safety-related California Community Care Licensing Division (CCLD) regulations.
  • Ensures the implementation of mandated and recommended childcare health and safety standards (e.g., CCLD regulations, Caring for Our Children (CFOC) 3rd Edition, and other childcare health and safety resources).
  • Under the guidance of the HNC, completes quarterly health-related classroom monitoring for compliance and coordinates corrective activities with the Health/Nutrition Coordinator as needed to ensure program compliance.
  • Engages in the timely and effective review of the health component of child files per mandated timelines outlined in policy and procedures.
  • Reviews medical histories and maintains recordkeeping on ChildPlus (CP) and central files for all new and returning children.
  • Under the guidance of the HNC, completes Tier I and Tier II monitoring activities as required by LACOE and the Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Utilizes CP data management systems to track and monitor cases and the effectiveness of service delivery.
  • Completes 90-day reviews for all new and returning childrens health documents based on LACOE GIMs and mandated timelines.
  • Monitors childrens immunization status to ensure compliance with immunization requirements and California reporting.
  • Completes health referrals in a timely manner as needed to ensure compliance of health services.
  • Creates individualized health plans (IHPs) in collaboration with health providers and parent/guardians.
  • Completes medication administration check-in process and all required documentation according to LACOE health policies.
  • Enters health data into CP according to the mandated timelines and in accordance with the ChildPlus manual.
  • Works in partnership with FSS and HSCS, to maintain and update child health records to ensure compliance for health services.
  • In partnership with HNC, identifies and tracks children with medications in the classroom.
  • Conducts periodic medication administration monitoring.
  • Partners with the HNC to prepare the LACOE Monthly Health Status Report.
  • Reviews and updates any Critical Health changes in ChildPlus monthly.
  • Performs tuberculosis (TB) risk assessments as needed for children in EHS/HS.
  • Helps FSS/HSCS to perform vision and hearing screenings and growth assessments asrequired.

Essential Functions: Child and Family Support

  • In Partnership with FSS, help to support and encourage families to follow through with the Bright Futures/AAP Periodicity Schedule for Health ssessment Requirements by Age Groups.
  • Communicates any health needs of students to AS and teaching staff including the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized health care plans (IHPs).
  • Conducts follow-up with parents/guardians for suspected or identified medical concerns or if a child is consecutively absent due to medical reasons.
  • Interprets doctors orders and discusses health plan with parents and teachers to ensure childs safety and well-being.
  • Assists with linking families to community health care systems to ensure that children will continue to receive on-going health care.
  • Communicates with parents, FSSs, HSCS, HNC and teachers regarding childrens health and dental status.
  • Supports and responds to parent/guardians' questions or concerns related to the health of their child.
  • Assists the Health/Nutrition Coordinator in the preparation of the annual Health Services Action Plan.
  • In partnership with the HNC, plans and implements staff and parent education materials and meetings.

Essential Functions: Training

  • Works in partnership with FSS and HSCS to provide support, training, and mentoring related to health requirements outlined in the Health GIM and the Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Assists in annual training of Vision and Hearing Equipment for FSS and HSCS.
  • In partnership with HNC, participates in the development, planning and delivery of mandated preservice health trainings for all staff.
  • Performs the annual Medication Administration training for preservice including a hand on demonstration with teaching staff for Epi-Pens, Inhalers and other medications to meet program needs.
  • Provides medication administration training and education to teaching staff as needed at preservice and throughout the program year as needed.

Other Requirements

  • Participates in continuing education activities when applicable for maintaining a license or certificate.
  • Other duties as assigned by HNC to meet program needs.

Qualifications Guidelines: Experience, Education/Training/Certification

  • The nurse must be a qualified Registered Nurse (RN) and have two to three years experience in health services (administering or providing direct service), preferably in pediatrics, bachelors in nursing health education required.
  • Hold current nursing license Current certification in CPR/First Aid.
  • Has Knowledge of health and safety mandates in the Head Start/Early Head Start Act (EHS/HS) and Performance Standards.
  • Has knowledge of health and safety-related California Community Care Licensing Division (CCLD) regulations.

License/Special Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure per state requirements.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish Speaking Preferred.
  • DOJ Clearance.
  • TB clearance, to be renewed every two years.
  • Physical Health Screening.
  • Vaccines (measles, pertussis, annual influenza, covid-19).

Education and Certification Requirements

  • The nurse must have three years experience in health services (administering or providing direct service).
  • Hold current nursing license.
  • Current certification in in CPR/First Aid.
  • Has Knowledge of health and safety mandates in the Head Start/Early Head Start Act and Performance Standards.
  • Has knowledge of health and safety-related California Community Care Licensing Division regulations.
