Los Alamos National Laboratory Welding R&D Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Engineer 3 - ($122,300- $206,300)

A successful applicant for Welding Engineer 3 will be expected to develop and lead multiple research projects and report results to stakeholders both internal and external to the laboratory. Typically Welding R&D Engineers work in teams to write proposals or work packages to fund projects to effectively address the manufacturing challenges that arise and provide impactful mission-related solutions, while also pushing the boundaries of manufacturing science to improve team capabilities. A Welding R&D Engineer at this level is expected to provide inclusive mentorship to early- and mid-career staff, students, and postdoctoral associates. Participation in groups beyond LANL, such as professional societies, working groups, and external collaborations, is also expected.

R&D Engineer 4 - ($146,800-$254,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level For Welding Engineer 4 an applicant will be expected to have extensive experience in welding, joining, and additive manufacturing, as well as exceeding the requirements of the lower level. A successful applicant will lead major projects that have a direct impact on the division or lab mission. For these projects works of major importance that influence future directions will be expected. They should be comfortable interfacing with federal program managers, high-level managers external to the Sigma division, and non-NNSA stakeholders. A Welding R&D Engineer 4 should be prepared to develop and introduce new, influential capabilities to the division.

This role is intended for an engineer with demonstrated experience proposing and developing programs specifically in welding, joining, and/or additive manufacturing, mentoring staff at all levels, project management, and maintaining relationships with team members, collaborators, and stakeholders.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 3:

  • Position requires a seasoned, experienced professional in a broad range of welding, joining, or wire-fed additive manufacturing processes.

  • Knowledge and proven ability in hands-on physical research of relevant processes.

  • Flexible research methods to address unexpected results, alteration of project requirements, or capability variability.

  • Demonstrated ability to propose and develop collaborative programs that provide state-of-the-art advances or address ongoing issues.

  • Desire to work on production-centric metals manufacturing research and development activities with staff at a variety of experience levels.

  • Experience in recruiting, evaluating, mentoring and retaining talented undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, and staff (including promoting diversity and fostering teamwork).

  • Display a substantial and significant record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, and/or technical products.

  • Willingness to work with hazardous and/or radiological materials.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Position typically requires a senior R&D Engineer with broad experience in welding, joining, and/or wire-fed additive manufacturing. A narrower, specialized field with the ability to translate national needs into technological objectives and goals may also qualify.

  • Extensive experience leading and managing programs, projects, and teams to support manufacturing processes.

  • Documented authored reports and/or publications of major importance and/or frequently which provided considerable impact within the engineering/scientific community.

  • Leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing appropriate new organizational-wide technical capabilities.

  • Experience serving in a consultative role to senior-level management and/or governmental management representatives.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 : Position requires a Master's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 4: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with weld modeling and simulation codes, such as C++, Abaqus, Ansys, Comsol, or similar.

  • Experience with weld monitoring/diagnostics, including computer data acquisition system application to processing or fabrication equipment.

  • Experience with mechanical property testing and characterization.

  • Experience with process qualification and certification methods, including industry standard practices.

  • Experience or familiarity with hazardous metals and/or radiological materials.

  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, dimensioning, and tolerance.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details=

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
