Los Alamos National Laboratory Undergrad Student-Chemistry and Material Science in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group (C-CDE) is seeking an undergraduate student who is reliable, self-motivated, and energetic, with an interest in chemistry and material science. The successful candidate will work closely with staff to obtain knowledge of chemical sciences, build a background in analytical and materials characterization, and gain experience working with a diverse set of students and staff. The successful candidate must be able to work professionally and independently with minimal supervision, be well-organized, establish and balance priorities, and demonstrate initiative, versatility, and accuracy in performing their work.

The internship will provide an opportunity to develop marketable skills in the areas of Chemistry/Chemical Sciences. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.

Examples of LANL projects in Chemistry and Material Science include, but are not limited to:

  • Inorganic, catalysis, polymers

  • Analytical chemistry, measurement science, spectroscopy

  • Materials chemistry, characterization, compatibility, aging, corrosion

  • Data analysis, advanced data visualization, modeling, and data mining

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Provide documentation of acceptance into an undergraduate program

  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Entering freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an undergraduate degree program.

  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Computer programming in support of scientific data acquisition or analysis;

  • Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices; C-CDE UGS Technical Student Pg. 2 4/9/2024 HR-FCS

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and

  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

Chemistry Division serves the Laboratory's core national security mission areas of weapons science and threat reduction with innovative chemical science and technology. Our capabilities are also essential for the emerging mission areas of energy security, civilian-sector R&D, and industrial partnering. Chemistry Division is a highly interactive, well-funded basic and applied research organization with an annual budget of approximately $138 million and a staff of approximately 400, organized into 5 groups. It operates within a complex safety and security envelope across multiple sites in the Laboratory, including radiological and limited areas.

Additional Details

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
