Los Alamos National Laboratory Technical Project Manager for Alpha Wing Technical Projects in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Inorganic, Isotope & Actinide Chemistry group (C-IIAC) is looking for a Technical Project Manager (TPM) to manager and ensure timely completion of technical and operational projects in support of research and development in C-IIAC's alpha wing. In this role, the TPM will plan and develop project deliverables, budgets, and schedules as well as oversee the project team in the planning, tracking, and execution of the project from initiation to completion. The project scopes range from fundamental chemistry to medical isotope production and national security. For each project, the teams are generally composed of a mix of graduate students, technicians, post-doctoral researchers, scientists, and engineers.

  • This position will support small R&D projects and ensure the planning, tracking, and execution of project plans from initiation to completion with direction and/or oversight from a more experienced teammate. Support the effective execution of scope, schedule, budget.

  • Will facilitate connections among project scientists, program, and line management for moderately complex project(s) to support PIs in determining technical requirements, deliverables, budgets, and schedules in accordance with the project charter and line expertise.

  • Provide leadership and tactical planning for execution of mid-sized and/or moderately complex technical project(s) and applies operational knowledge and experience to achieve project objectives.

  • Apply knowledge and experience in developing project plans and detailed work breakdown structures, negotiating work packages, and assigning various aspects of work to complete project deliverables.

  • Negotiate with project scientists, program, and line managers to ensure that resources are available to accomplish the work, to identify procurement and contracting needs, and to marshal resources to complete project deliverables within the scope, schedules, and budgets defined in project work packages.

  • Under limited direction, monitors performance and manages, under change control, the project scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines.

  • Integrates moderately complex project work with other LANL priorities and commitments, including safety, security, environmental compliance, quality, contractor assurance, and business imperatives.

  • Collaborate successfully with diverse groups.

  • Exercise utmost discretion in handling sensitive situations to ensure confidentiality and professionalism.

  • Display excellent oral and written communication skills, effectively interacting with personnel across all levels, internally and externally.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Working knowledge and experience in the project management of technical work including developing project plans, managing scope, budgets, and technical baselines.

  • Ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as the primary interface between customers, executing organizations, and line management for small or moderately complex projects.

  • Ability to develop and nurture effective internal customer relationships.

  • Experience and working knowledge of project management functions and tools, estimating, cost, and scheduling.

  • Demonstrated successful record of effective interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by stakeholder interactions and collaborations, briefings, and presentations.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance (Usually requires U.S. citizenship).

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Project Management Institute certification is preferred for this level.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Currently hold a DOE Q clearance.

  • Previous technical experience in physical sciences.

  • Knowledge of relevant funding agencies and experience in organizing and writing proposals to these agencies.

  • Ability to use project management and/or spreadsheet software to track project and financial data.

  • Project Management Institute Certification

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Note to Applicants: While the posted salary range for this position is broad, it is highly unusual for selected applicants to be hired at the top end of the range and more common for selected candidates to grown into the full salary band over time.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
