Los Alamos National Laboratory Sigma Operations Support Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

A Deputy Group Leader (DGL) in the Sigma Operations Group (Sigma-Ops) assists with the tactical and strategic planning for the Group, ensuring that mission needs and programmatic deliverables are met today and into the future. The DGL will work closely with the Sigma-Ops Group Leader to provide leadership, vision, strategic and tactical planning, and management to ensure the execution of high-quality operational support for Sigma Division.

The successful DGL will be a member of the Division leadership team who is specifically responsible for assisting the Sigma Operations Group Leader in the pursuit of operational excellence.

Some of the highlights of this position include:

  • Managing operational and business process workflows and programmatic capabilities across the Division.

  • Overseeing procurement activities for the Division.

  • Maintaining quality capabilities: process improvement, training and qualifications, work processes, instruction, document control.

  • Maintain inventory, materials management and programmatic equipment.

  • Leading Safety, Security, Environmental and Quality program coordinators; including, MT&E, ChemDB, MC&A, Packaging/Shipping, Classified Parts, Criticality Safety, Laser Safety, Glovebox Safety, Pressure Safety, Precious Metals, and Material Handling, Safety Basis, Environmental Management System, Worker Safety and Security.

  • Serve as liaison between facility, construction and engineering personnel and programmatic point of contacts; and liaison between waste management, RAD protection, industrial hygiene, quality, ergonomic and environmental professional's assignment to Sigma facility.

  • Supervising cyber and physical security capabilities; including, the MST SLAN, CMPC, vaults/vtrs, safes, controlled storage, access control, and keys/cores.

  • Managing Technical Project Management teams, Production Control, and integrated schedules.

  • Maintain employee teambuilding and mentoring to enhance capability development and integration for disciplined operational initiatives.

  • Develop the team without compromising the interpersonal relationships of group members.

  • Ensure adherence to Conduct of Operations, maintaining safe and secure workspaces, and ethical work practices while remaining agile and adaptable to new challenges and change.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical

  • Demonstrated experience with management oversight of operations and corresponding hazards; such as, nuclear materials, manufacturing, weapons manufacturing, and high hazard activities in support of national security.

  • Demonstrated leadership and management oversight of programmatic operational responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting predictive planning in areas ranging from facility maintenance to project management.

  • Demonstrated management and leadership of safety, security, HR, project management and business operations, including budget management.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of management and customers.

  • Demonstrated expertise in facility operational requirements, including, compliance Conduct of Operations, engineering, maintenance and training.

Leadership and Management

  • Demonstrated experience as an independent decision maker, providing reliable leadership as well as impeccable customer service.

Safety and Security

  • Working knowledge of operational rigor needed to maintain safe, secure, and regulatory compliant operations.

  • Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to personnel at all levels, with an emphasis on experience coordinating efforts in cross-organizational collaboration projects.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active "Q" clearance

  • Experience working in R&D and manufacturing environments.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
