Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Industrial Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Be part of an amazing engineering team here at the nation's Detonator Production facility that supports our Nation's nuclear deterrent. As an Industrial Engineer you will be providing technical expertise and leadership in the design and development of process and quality improvement programs for detonator production. Being a hands-on Industrial Engineer with project leadership and problem-solving skills to work in our collaborative team environment, you will conduct time studies, develop, and implement work standards and participate on new product development teams. Your work will directly provide detonation related products and services of superior quality and value to protect our nation and promote world stability.

This position will be filled as a R&D Engineer Level 1 or Level 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.

R&D Engineer 1- ($92,300-$151,000)

As an R&D Engineer 1, you will be expected to apply scientific principles, research, design, or development of processes, experiments, theories, or technologies in support of engineering research and development (R&D). You should have solid experience in an engineering discipline and the ability to act as an individual contributor. Some of these duties will be designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects. You will be expected to take responsibility for understanding tasks and own contributions to deliverables and set direction and goals for assigned tasks and manage your own assignments. Contribute to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects. You may directly contribute to the achievement of programmatic objectives. You will continue developing technical expertise and knowledge within the discipline and develop new skills in related disciplines. You will be expected to work with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect data, analyze data, perform cost-benefit-risk analysis, recommend changes to processes based on the results of the analyses, and help implement the changes. Ability to work in a team environment is a must as you will be expected to work with various process teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter.

R&D Engineer 2- (101,700-$168,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level as an R&D Engineer 2, you will be expected to have demonstrated knowledge of and experience in an engineering discipline. With demonstrated knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing problem solving and process improvement projects, you will be expected to work with members from various process teams in a collaborative manner to collect and analyze data, perform cost-benefit-risk analysis, recommend changes to processes based on the results of the analyses, define post-implementation monitoring and benefits, and help implement the changes. You will champion change and make presentations to upper management at various points of the change study. You will be expected to get familiar with IE models and to conduct simulations with them under the supervision of more experienced staff. Ability to work in a team environment is a must as you will be expected to work with various process teams whose members would have varied levels of experience and expertise with the subject matter. Prior knowledge/certification in lean manufacturing principles, statistical quality control techniques, and Six Sigma methodologies are highly desirable.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and proven experience in engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures and equipment to the improvement and production of specialized manufacturing and manufacturing processes.

  • Basic ability to apply process improvement and problem-solving techniques including, but not limited to Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to address issues such as operational and quality process improvement. Helps in developing a Lean Six Sigma organization, driven to improve performance, cost, throughput, and quality control metrics.

  • Experience in process improvement, process engineering, or industrial engineering.

  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing with diverse employees and organizations at all levels. Having strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work and influence cross-functionally.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:

  • Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing manufacturing and characterization projects and strong experience in solution development and implementation. Experience leading cross-functional projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply process improvement and problem-solving techniques including, but not limited to Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to address issues such as operational and quality process improvement. Helps in developing a Lean Six Sigma organization, driven to improve performance, cost, throughout, and quality control metrics.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation

Desired Qualifications:

  • Lean, Six Sigma, and/or Lean Six Sigma certification from an accredited source.

  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification from an accredited institution is highly desired.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, safety, and quality requirements.

  • Experience in systems engineering, statistical process control (SPC), and lean six sigma processes.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis. Experience in data mining, data manipulation, and data analysis.

  • Certification and/or experience in change management techniques.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations in a nuclear or radiological facility.

  • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
