Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer 4 (W-2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The W76 Systems Engineering Group (W-2) is looking to hire and fill an R&D Engineer 4 position. W-2 is responsible for the technical and programmatic oversight of matters pertaining to the W76 Nuclear Weapon Systems (W76-0, W76-1, and W76-2) and UK Trident Program. The selected candidate will serve as a System Engineer within the W76 System Engineering Group. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Lead and provide support of System Engineering for W76 qualification and future W76 system studies. This includes existing and new programs.

• Lead and participate in the development of new projects related to the W76 and Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) programs.

• Provide technical guidance to assure WR and JTA production, surveillance, and WR warhead sustainability is achieved per relevant directives.

• Provide engineering expertise and resolve technical and programmatic issues as deemed appropriate by the W-2 management team.

• Interface with colleagues across LANL as well as at other Laboratories, Production Agencies, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), and the United States Navy and their contractors.

• Represent line and/or program management to external stakeholders; representing LANL at SLBM Warheads Project Officers' Group (POG) subgroup(s) meeting as deemed necessary by the W-2 management team.

• Contribute and/or provide leadership to the following areas: the stockpile annual assessment report (AAR), significant finding notifications (SFNs) and investigations (SFIs), and military unsatisfactory reports (URs), oversee safety, surveillance, and production and/or disassembly operations.

• Serve as a technical mentor to early- and mid-career staff.

What You Need

Weapon Engineering Experience

• Advanced-level experience and knowledge of nuclear weapon system design and development, which may include experience with testing, qualification, requirements, assembly, component development, production, and/or surveillance.

• Experience with ensuring system and/or component-level requirements are met by Production Agencies.

• Familiar with component- or system-level surveillance activities.

• Demonstrated experience with engineering authorization and document management systems.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in meeting schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.

  • Project leadership experience: ability to establish clearly defined deliverables and milestones and lead as team to meet project objectives.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with 6.X product design engineering phases to include Development Engineering (Conceptual and Baseline Design) and Production Engineering.

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant classification guidance and demonstrated commitment to laboratory goals in assuring the security of classified information.

Technical Leadership

Experience interacting with and presenting to LANL management, DOE and/or DoD nuclear weapons customers. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and organize assignments. Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and mentor junior team members. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead teams in a multi-discipline environment and interact effectively with a variety of organizations.

Problem Solving

Ability to recognize technical problems, and effectively document/clearly communicate issues of concern.

Demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate and draw conclusions from large amounts of technical information.

Leadership, Communication, and Teamwork

Demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross organizational teams to solve complex problems. Experience in the delegation of project tasks while maintaining accountability. Demonstrated ability to work with nominal supervision. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and through written documentation. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and be part of a team in a multi-discipline environment. Experience with conflict resolution.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • System engineering experience with any LANL weapon system.

  • Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.

  • Active Q Clearance.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
