Los Alamos National Laboratory Project Controls Engineer 3/4 (Weapons) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • This position requires strong in-depth knowledge of project controls, high degree of technical skilled experience, and proven ability to develop and implement policies that support project controls objectives, engineering and/or Weapons production management customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.

  • Knowledge and intermediate experience with the implementation and maintenance of EVMS principles and techniques that complies with EIA-748 in U.S. Government facilities, programs, and/or projects.

  • Demonstrated advanced experience in the Project Controls function and sub functions of cost and schedule, performing, monitoring, and reviewing planning and scheduling functions, including schedule development, schedule control, and schedule analysis.

  • Demonstrated Knowledge and experience of financial reporting systems and specific project code of accounts, advanced experience using scheduling software tools such as Primavera P6, experience using personal computer operating systems and general computer applications and software, including several basic software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Additional Job Requirements for Project Controls Engineer 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated advanced experience in cost engineering functions, including cost estimating, cost control, financial reporting systems, and cost and variance analysis, preparing project controls reports, plans, and detailed staffing utilization plans.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a supportive role to Project Managers and Control Account Managers generating information that is critical for effective management and decision making, work independently, organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks under strict deadlines and changing priorities.

  • Distinguished record of accomplishment in following technical direction and goals, developing programs, implementing effective business practices and systems, analyzing budgets and finances, and interacting with customers and stakeholders.

  • Experience mentoring or leading a team; providing personnel management support that includes training of technical and non-technical personnel and providing technical and operational direction to assigned personnel.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate course work may be desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in, or working knowledge of the NNSA Weapon Life Cycle, or 6.X Process.

  • Advanced experience of using the scheduling tool Primavera P6.

  • Experience of using the cost processor Deltek Cobra.

  • Experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE) at headquarters or field office level, or with state and federal regulators.

  • Knowledge of Laboratory processes and procedures customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
