Los Alamos National Laboratory Programmatic Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at the R&D Engineer 1or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The TA55 Process Maintenance and Decontamination Services (PMDS) group is seeking electrical engineers.
TA-55 Facility Operations' Mission is to provide Plutonium Science and Manufacturing, and their tenants, with Safe, Secure, Compliant and Available Facilities. We strive for continuous improvement by fostering a learning organization with strong values for safety, people, and cost effectiveness. The PMDS group is principally responsible for all programmatic maintenance and is adding enhanced capability to the programmatic engineering support it provides for all processes in the Directorate.
R&D Engineer 1 $92,300 - $151,000
The successful candidate will be a member of the Electrical Support Team and help develop and implement designs, installation, maintenance, and support of electrical and control systems for process equipment. This work involves the process support for all groups in the Directorate as well as some organizations that also support our Directorate from other LANL Divisions. Interaction and coordination with other engineers and technicians on the team as well as close cooperation with other support groups (Facilities Engineering, Construction, Waste, Maintenance, and Safety) is expected.
R&D Engineer 2 $101,700 - $168,200
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will help develop projects, assist with electrical and control systems for process equipment technical guidance and support to all projects and provide electrical training, technical guidance, and operational assistance to other technologists, technicians, and engineers in planning, installation, integration, operation, and maintenance of these systems.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge and experience with applying and demonstration of engineering design cycle principles: requirements gathering, design, and implementation, debugging, testing, documentation.
Displays a record of achievement through previous designs, completed installations, or technical products.
Design and hands-on experience with electrical and control systems for process equipment.
Knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical, SPICE, Promis.e or other electrical system design software
Knowledge and experience writing the following types of documents: Failure Modes and Effects Analyses, Energized Electrical Work Permits, Equipment Maintenance Plans, Master Equipment Lists, and similar quality assurance related documents. Working knowledge of NFPA 70, 70E, and 79.
Demonstrated broad knowledge of electrical, electronics, instrumentation, and control-systems.
Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, including technical writing and technical presentations.
Experience working in a non-reactor nuclear facility.
Knowledge of distributed control systems and networking.
Ability to obtain and maintain Fissionable Material Handler (FMH) qualification.
Ability to obtain and maintain Glove Box Operator (GBO) qualification.
Ability to obtain and maintain HRP certification.
Perform work, requiring level II PPE.
Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q clearance.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Demonstrated record of design and/or publications of major importance, frequently with considerable impact within the engineering/scientific community or as part of the enduring mission of ALDWP.
Experience providing leadership in identifying, promoting, and developing appropriate new Laboratory-wide technical capabilities.
Training/Certifications: Electrical Safety Officer training is desired.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
DOE 426.2 order: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Active DOE Q clearance and HRP Certified.
Glovebox Operator (GBO)
Knowledge and experience in the design and development of computer-based data acquisition systems, such as Allen Bradley / Rockwell Software programmable logic controllers (PLCs), SCADA, and industrial computers.
Knowledge and experience in the design, installation, modification, and maintenance of industrial control systems at secure industrial facilities.
Demonstrated experience with electrical and facility requirements related to programmatic equipment.
Knowledge of control & data acquisition theory and instrumentation hardware.

Work Schedule:
This position may require 24/7 coverage and therefore may require working a shift schedule.
Shift Differential Pay:
Exempt employees may receive shift differential pay when they are assigned by their manager to work a regular shift in which four or more hours are scheduled either before 8:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. They must also be authorized to receive shift differential pay by the directorate- or higher-level manager.
These shifts typically fall into two categories:
Swing: normally 4:00 p.m. to 12 midnight
Graveyard: normally 12 midnight to 8:00 a.m
The rules governing the payment of shift differential are subject to change, including the amount of shift differential.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.
