Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations Specialist 4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Operations Specialist 4 will report to the Readiness Operations Manager and will be responsible for supporting the LANL Readiness Program. The LANL Readiness Program provides an independent process for verifying readiness for startup and restart of Hazard Category 1, 2, or 3 nuclear facilities, activities, and operations. The Conduct of Operations Program provides oversight of the implementation of Conduct of Operations at LANL. The selected candidate will provide overall administrative and technical support of these programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and coordinate various administrative functions in conjunction with or in support of operational program compliance, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling of work activities.

  • Assist in Logistic and support of self-assessments and incident investigations and ensures accurate development and/or processing of any required reports and/or recommendations.

  • Assist Team members and Team Leads in developing assessment reports.

  • Support Readiness program management in preparing and submitting DOE required reports.

  • Support the Readiness Program Manager and Operations Manager with tasks for both programs.

  • Oversee the implementation of documentation systems and ensures compliance with all applicable document control and records management activities and security/compliance implications.

  • Develop advanced concepts, techniques and standards based on professional principles and practices in relation to operational support activities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Expertise: Knowledge and consultative experience with documentation quality assurance, including document controls and records management. Knowledge and understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and operational policies and procedures.

Knowledge and Expertise: Expert-level knowledge of nuclear materials management and controls, nuclear criticality safety, quality assurance, waste management, or environmental control. Demonstrated experience working in a consultative manner toward long-range targets and/or objectives.

Communication & Collaboration: Demonstrated success in developing program activities, goals and objectives; creating program evaluation tools and evaluating the effectiveness of the program. Demonstrated ability for preparing clear, concise and informative reports, correspondence and other written materials.

Technology: Proficiency with software applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiar with the LANL Readiness and Conduct of Operations Programs and/or nuclear experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to make improvements to the Program and execute changes to meet requirements while supporting mission parameters.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, often with competing deadlines.

  • Knowledge of the Laboratory's issues management process and performance measurement processes.

  • Knowledge of Laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Knowledgeable of Laboratory business and operations systems and standard software applications.

  • Exceptional customer service, organizational skills, and ability to interact with all levels of personnel internal and external to the Laboratory.

  • Knowledgeable in problem solving skills involving deliverables that rely on complex processes, multiple organizations or institutions, and complex customer requirements.

  • Knowledge in defining expectations and mutual responsibilities with members of other internal organizations and outside stakeholders; effectively manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
