At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through scientific, technological, and engineering excellence. The Secure Networks and Assurance (SNA) group within Weapons Research Services (WRS) Division is seeking a creative and experienced Red Hat OpenShift Administrator with proficiency in the following technologies in an Enterprise environment: various Linux distributions, containerization platforms (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.), and virtualization platforms (VMWare, libvirt, etc.).

WRS-SNA works closely with LANL Information & Technology as well as other internal organizations, to practice change control, version control, orchestrated configuration, security hardening, and continuous monitoring. Our environments support weapons related services, tools, and frameworks that are widely used across LANL's weapons programs as well as some of the following mission groups: Weapons Mission Technology (WRS-WMT) who operate and facilitate scientific and engineering software suites (supporting the National Nuclear Security Agency [NNSA] Product Realization Integrated Digital Enterprise [PRIDE] and the larger Nuclear Security Enterprise [NSE]) and the Nuclear Weapons Cyber Assurance Lab (NWCAL) who perform advanced analytics, assessments, and response on mission-related technology and software (partnering with NNSA Nuclear Enterprise Assurance [NEA] program).

Working as part of a team, the candidate will perform tasks including but not limited to the following:

Architect and design an OpenShift infrastructure on unclassified and classified networks. Administration of an OpenShift environment supporting a Continuous Integration (CI)/Continuous Development (CD) environment. Research emerging technologies, new IT trends, hardware and software tools and solutions for the benefit of the WRS mission planning, architecting, documenting, and implementing new hardware and software solutions. Supporting customers in unclassified and classified programmatic environments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience managing an OpenShift Container Platform to include extensive knowledge and experience in deploying, configuring, and maintaining OpenShift environments. Advanced experience using virtual machines, Linux containers, container orchestration (Kubernetes) and related concept implementations. In depth understanding of networking components and their configurations within OpenShift. Advanced experience in creating and managing applications on the OpenShift platform.

Programming Knowledge

Advanced technical experience writing scripting languages such as Unix shell language (e.g., Bash, Perl, Python, Java, or similar scripting languages). Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Communication

Strong analytical, documentation, communication, and teaming skills to include a demonstrated ability that includes reporting on project status to senior level management and project stakeholders. Demonstrated technical writing and verbal communication skills to handle communication with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders.

Collaboration

Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment to analyze problems, propose solutions to management, and deploy and document implemented solutions. Experience leading or mentoring junior staff focused on technical and soft skill sets.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 15 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced experience in a high availability production computing environment.

  • Experience working in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment.

  • Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

  • Experience with ESN (Enterprise Secure Network) application administration.

  • Proficiency in configuring, deploying, and administering Ubuntu, Debian, and RHEL servers in physical and virtual environments.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer security, authentication concepts, SSL, Kerberos, tcp/ip, and other network protocols.

  • Experience using configuration management such as Puppet, Salt, Chef, Ansible, or CFEngine.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Working alone, Working overtime or irregular schedule, and Domestic/foreign travel.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year or 2 years.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
