Los Alamos National Laboratory Manufacturing Manager 3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for a highly motivated, self-driven, customer service focused and experienced individual to lead one of two Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) technical support teams consisting of Engineers and Scientists in the Nuclear Process Infrastructure Group (NPI-9). The NPI-9 group oversees and supports various non-destructive assays, both in a laboratory setting and, in the field, in-situ. Calorimetry, gamma isotopic, Fairfield gamma, neutron coincidence, and passive/active neutron are some of the technologies used and developed by the NDA team. Additionally, the NPI-9 group is responsible for the safe and compliant long-term storage of nuclear material.

As a First Line Manager (FLM) for NPI-9, you will report to the NPI-9 Group Leader and will provide leadership and management of non-destructive assays, and other operations on the day shift. The FLM will be responsible for planning, organizing, and defining strategic goals, ensuring administrative and operating procedures are current, understood, and adhered to before releasing work. You will be responsible for resource and performance management and ensuring worker qualification and authorization. The FLM will be responsible for maintaining and promoting continuous and ongoing communication with line management and reporting on work status, deliverables, and commitments. You will be responsible for providing financial stewardship over budget, procurement, time and labor, travel, and property. Effective time management skills and the ability to deal effectively with changing priorities and conflicting demands are key in this role.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Job Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following disciplines: nuclear materials research, process development, technology demonstrations, manufacturing, and technology; weapons component manufacturing; manufacturing quality and production control and/or program management.

  • Demonstrated experience leading a multidisciplinary group of scientists, engineers, technicians and/or professional staff in a technical environment.

  • Demonstrated experience identifying, acquiring, and managing resources in support of organizational deliverables, scope, and schedule.

  • Demonstrated experience executing work in compliance with facility requirements.

  • Knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to nuclear facilities.

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience managing business operations to include financial, human resources, procurement, and other related business activities.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills on matters of functional areas and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Comfortable working near sources of ionizing radiation, working near machinery, and moving parts, wearing a mask or respirator.

Education: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Leadership: Leadership skills including experience in supervision, negotiations, conflict resolution, mentoring, team building, employee motivation, and personnel development.

Professional Level Experience: Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Conduct of Operations, criticality safety and radiation protection.

Planning and Organization: Experience establishing the scope, schedule, and budget through work package development, resource and performance management and ensuring worker qualifications and authorizations along with managing the tactical execution of work.

Problem Solving: Advanced and demonstrative experience solving problems, developing, and delivering solutions, and innovating business practices to ensure customer satisfaction.

Communication: Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications. Demonstrated evidence of cross-organizational interaction with external regulatory or oversight agencies.

Teamwork: Experience teaming with multiple organizations to accomplish objectives and demonstrated ability to elicit effective teamwork, including mentoring and motivating team members and peers.

Safety and Security: Knowledgeable of Integrated Work Management (IWM) and Integrated Safety and Security Management (ISSM) procedures. Knowledge of Classified Matter Protection and Control, Cyber Security, Q Clearance, and Security Clearance responsibilities and HRP Certification.

LANL Systems: Experience using waste and nuclear materials management databases such as the Waste Characterization and Tracking System (WCATS), LAMCAS and LANMAS.

Certifications : Fissile Material Handler Operator/Supervisor

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
